Hi Andy I like the look of the anti aircraft stuff but the railings don't really add anymore that's not already provided in the MK1 other Eduard stuff. I really like the look of the Eduard main Railings so will be getting that and the aircraft set. As for the Pontos stuff some nice details but I think its availability is a little ambitious, shame it wasn't ready for the launch of the kit really regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Hi Andy, with the extra etch kits you intend adding is going to make this one seriously detailed build of impressive quality.... .. I look forward to seeing the finished product.. if indeed you ever do finish it especially with some 240 additional minute parts for the AA guns.... .. Love what you are doing even it the build has to be delayed for a while.... Best regards Alan

Understand why you are parking the build. I have decided to push on as I am and scratch build anything missing The Pontos stuf looks nice but nothing serously more than we have in the other kits and some of the detail looks worse than the kit parts! the flag staffs are stunning but I aint paying another £180 just for them “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Pontos have finally revealed the PE Frets for their forthcoming Super Set. I am interested to see that it looks like they have a Template for the correct re-drilling of the Low Frequency Passive Sonar (GHG) microphone pattern. Trumpeter have put this on the Hull but it's a far too even 'U' Shape, the actual shape was a much more random scatter of sensors, although still in a 'U' shape. Very tempted

Resin Sets from CMK Maritime, I like the Reels with the Canvas Covers. But I can't find them anywhere else or as individual sets http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CMK-Z...&hash=item4854e9bc7e

Guess what Jase, I've got the Hose Reel Covers already . They will make a nice contrast to the open reels, most of the pictures show the reels covered when not in use, the Pontos set has resin lifebelts included. They were on EBay individually from a German Supplier a few weeks back, I think he's got everything separately. The Chain has arrived too, it's a very little over scale but looks good, although it will need a spray to get rid of the shiny copper look. I'll pop some in the post next week, no charge .

So it's time to pull the Dust Sheets of the Bismarck and move forward. I am now the owner of; 58 Sheets of Photo Etch with many 1000's of PE parts. 2 Wooden Decks Well over 100 pieces of Resin. Something like 400 pieces of cast and turned metal. Several sheets of Transfers and Masks Not to mention the 1000+ Plastic parts from the original Kit. and indeed this is not the end as I am committed to yet more Etch, Resin and Metal. These extras come from Pontos, MK1 Design, Trumpeter, Eduard, Albion Alloys, CMK Maritime, WEM, Jotika, Modelschlatschiffe, North Star Models and G-Factor. Don't ask what this hoard has cost, as I'd rather not think about it I now have an ethos for my build and hopefully this will become apparent as I build, as I am going to try and do something a little different I've already built some sub assemblies, but some of these may well have to be reworked. So let the insanity begin Firstly I am using Pontos Pedestals, these were very difficult to source and it took 6 months to locate some (and they were all gone within hours), but are really nice solid Polished Brass. I have used 4 (or 2 sets), because of the size of the Hull. They are normally used in pairs for 1/350 models. I have Epoxied the nuts inside the Hull, so the Pedestals can be removed. I also had to add 0.4mm packing washers to level them out. Secondly, I have replaced the Plastic Kit Props with G-Factor Brass ones and added 2mm Brass Prop Shafts (including the centre one, which has a plastic boss on the Kit). The Trumpeter add on pack has White Metal ones but these are no better looking than the plastic kit ones. Parts used to date 382.

Nice toy see you getting stuck in. Your going to have to do a lot of planing at each stage to ensure you dont miss any of your upgrades. Good luck “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Good luck Thanks Jase, you're right about the planning, it's made worse by the inability of the PE manufacturers to provide decent instructions. Missing numbers, mis-numbered parts etc, etc. At least Pontos have an open forum on their set and are issuing corrections.

Hi Andy, great to see progress once more.... All I can say is with all that etch you really have taken on the mother of all builds but feel sure the effort and the cost will be very much worth it... .. Seriously looking forward to seeing how it moves forward... .. Good luck with her... Best regards Alan

Moving on. I've added felt pads to the bases of the Pontos Pedestals. This was done with self-adhesive Black Felt which is readily available in a Rainbow array of colours. I have fitted the main deck and prepared it for the Wooden Deck. I am using the Pontos Wooden Deck as, for me, it has a number of improvements over the MK1 Deck. The most significant of which are the smaller plank width of 0.6mm compared to the 1mm width of the MK1. This is a match for the 125mm planks shown in AotS and equates to the width that can be seen in various photos. Also the inclusion of the Crew Access Hatch for the Smoke Chambers, which is totally absent from the MK1 Deck, in addition the Smoke Canister Hatches on the MK1 Deck are far too small (See Photo). There are a number of other Hatches that are not detailed on the MK1 as well. The Pontos Deck does require the removal of about 60 bumps and lumps from the Trumpeter Deck, notably the Breakwater Latch Mountings (which are all replaced by PE) and the Bollard mounting pins, as the Solid Brass Pontos Bollards are Pinned and require holes (just to make life more difficult). In addition I have filled the Passive Radar holes in preparation for re-drilling to the Pontos Template.

Best regards Alan Thanks Alan, I've got a bit of a thing for really massive builds, I love the idea of all those parts. Must stem from a childhood spent dreaming about a Meccano set 10.

Kind Regards Nigel You're not wrong there Nigel. The Bismarck 1/200 seems to have really got the after market guys going . It will be interesting to see if the other 1/200 releases such as the Hornet, generate the same level of frenzy.

Just for information. The Book 'Anatomy of the Ship - Bismarck', which has been very difficult to find and has been offered for absurd amounts of money 2nd hand, is being reissued. It's a paperback version and is due out later this month (about the 20th, I think), it's currently being discounted to about £20 and is available for preorder on Amazon, Book Depositry etc.
