When America was trying to break the sound barrier in the mid to late '40s it was having severe difficulties overcoming the problem of pitch control when very close to the speed of sound. In truth, they were completely stumped, but it just so happened that Britain had also been developing its' own sound barrier breaking aircraft at the same time and an agreement was reached between the traitorous British (Labour!!) Government and the US Government to share and exchange research data in order to pool resources and thus aid progress. Unfortunately, the US reneged on their side of the bargain, but not before they had been given access to details of a revolutionary design concept that was on our 'Top Secret' aircraft, which proved vital to the success of supersonic flight and that concept is still present on all supersonic aircraft to this day. Britain ended up getting no worthwhile data at all from the US, but our (stolen!!) concept was immediately applied to their Bell X-1 Supersonic aircraft and the rest is history!! 
What was the name of the aircraft that Britain was developing to beat the Americans to the Sound Barrier and what was the significant design concept on our aircraft that enabled the Americans to subsequently steal what would have been our thunder? (Quite literally!!)

The Swallow was a lovely plane though even if it did kill the odd test pilot!!

I think it was the Saunders-roe SR53 Rocket and jet powered aircraft which had an all moving elevator/tail plane, as a note after the brits exchanged the information to the yanks and the refusal of the yanks to share there information the money that was being used to develop the above aircraft suddenly was withdrawn. It turned out the yanks were supplying most of the funding and they swiftly withdrew it to stop the brits breaking the sound barrier before they did. Ooooooh!! Very close Andy but not quite correct my friend so you'll have to wait for the cigar!! Won't say which bit is wrong as that would give too much help, but you ARE very close!!
Thanks for the extra info - what swines those yanks were? Still we know the truth of who really cracked the sound barrier and that's all that matters as the History books are full of misquotes and cheats anyway!!

Exactly the same thing happened with the race into space, in 1945 the Yanks sent Major Robert Staver from the US Army Ordnance to London for a meeting with British Intelligence about the German V2 missiles. We (British Intelligence) gave him every bit of information we had on Werner Von Braun including all our enigma intercepts thinking we were co-operating with our 'allies' to share any discoveries. Staver used the British info to track down Von Braun, his team of scientists and actual examples of the V2 technology. Once he'd found them he then went out of his way to ensure that everything went to the Americans and nothing at all went to the British (or anyone else). Throughout history the 'special relationship' has been nothing but the Brits being screwed by the Yanks! Apparently there have been four aircraft with that nickname, those being - the Bristol Beaufighter, the OV-1 Mohawk, the F-111 Aardvark and the F4U Corsair!!
I'll go with the WWII Bristol Beaufighter?

Thanks Andy!! Apparently the radial engines in the Beaufighter were so quiet because they used 'sleeve' valves instead of the normal 'Poppet' type valves - interesting stuff!!
1. Name the Unites States' top 'Air Ace' (Full name AND nickname please!)?
2. What type of plane did he score all of his kills with?
3. His later aircraft carried the name of his wife on the nose - what was her name?

Don't worry, I understand the nickname problem - just another example of the nanny state watching everything you do and say!! Try typing in cir cu m ference as a complete word and see what happens when you post it - I hate this stupid PC world - it's in the middle of a word for G*d's sake, so what's wrong with it?? Talk about trying to protect people from there own actions!! Something to chuck in Room 101 I think!!!
