Admiral Anti Spiral wrote:Very stunning alan, with the work you've done its setting to become a top quality ship build Wow, thanks very much for that comment Admiral.... Have learnt lots so far and still have masses to learn yet and am doing all I can to ensure this will be a successful build... .. So much so I now have other modifications in mind as we move forward but as yet they are mostly cosmetic and not structural.... structural mods will be attempted on my next build..... Thanks again, appreciated... Regards Alan

Hi Alan, Love the mods I have been practicing with the spray painting on a large sheet of ply I have. The 'milky effect' makes the black very thin. Did you use the Dull Black from the Admiralty paint set? What primer if any did you use? I am dying to have a go, the practice sprays I have done, look okay, except very washy, so may need to use less water to thin it. Regards Claret Also working on: SOTS. Moebius 1/32 Flying Sub with PE & lights.
Waiting in the wings: Polarlights Spindrift from Land of the Giants.
finished: 007 Iconic DB5.

Regards Claret Thanks for the encouraging comments Claret, very much appreciated... Best way to learn about the consistency of the paint and how much to thin it down is simply to keep practicing and making notes of your thinning ratio until you get the desired effects.. Also, I found the best way for me was to actually do 3 or 4 very fine coats rather than try to do it all in one... The other beauty of the airbrush is with the right consistency of paint you can actually bring the grain out in the wood... .. I didn't use Admiralty dull black I actually used tube acrylic paint ..Galeria Mars Black, available from Hobbystore, this paint has to be thinned down... Hope this answers your question... Best regards Alan

Tonight I finally finished the keel and to finish off the evenings work I painted black some of the bamboo strips ready for fitting the wales.... .. Am going to darken the keel a little and am experimenting with various stains to get the effect I want... I do know I am not using walnut stain, makes it far too dark..... .. Issue 39 complete so no onto issue 40.... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Finally, thought I would leave some pics of how she is now but the right way up.... .. She is now sitting in the build cradle meant for the Vic, fits in there nicely... Thanks to Bernd for the tip.... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

She looks fabulous Alan Before comitting to stain the keel darker I would decide on what finish you are putting on.Because of the tint in varnish it will darken the keel but not the hull because it is dark already.I had the same problem with my build, the maple was much lighter in sheet form used on the keel, but the varnish has mellowed this right down.It is certainly worth trying it on offcuts of planking and keel material. Kind Regards Nigel

Kind Regards Nigel Thanks Nigel, it is exactly that that I am doing at present on offcuts of the sheet Walnut... I don't want to darken it too much but am looking for a bit of a better match... You are correct, the sheet walnut is lighter than the strips... So far, I have found giving the sheet walnut a coat of light oak stain gives a better colour match... but will continue to see what else I can come up with.... .. Am also experimenting with finishing the hull off with sanding sealer (Shellac) but with a very light fine sanding to finish it off, just to take the shine off....so far I quite like the look of that finish... .. Have to say though I am quite enjoying experimenting with the different materials, its fun.... Thanks again, Regards Alan

Kind Regards Nigel

Think that is what we all really aspire to.... Like you say, experimentation is a key factor to this hobby so the more we do the more successful we will become... Regards Alan

Tonight I managed to finish the portside wales including the cutting and touching up with Admiralty dull black.... .. Found it a fairly straight forward process even though a little time consuming... Tomorrow I will make a start on the starboard wales before tackling the two stern pieces....
