Packing pieces made of square acetal strip were cut and filed to shape and added to the replacement part.

Once all the pilot holes were drilled, I deburred them and glued the replacement part to the hull with PVA glue. See attached photo. I will let this dry thoroughly over the weekend before moving onto fitting the brass pins, which i'll detail in my next post.

Nice work Phil, from disaster to a very nice repair job. You must be feeling a sense of satisfaction.

I only came across the damage you sustained a few days ago but you've made a wonderful job of putting it right. I know just how you must have felt, when my old Victory got her poop deck 'shot away' in the attic accident I felt the same but its a lovely feeling when you see it come back to 'good as new' again.
Now, just keep away from depth charges and heat sources!

Good morning from 'The Dockyard'.

Further progress was made on the hull repairs. After the replacement part was glued into place, the next step was to reinforce it by inserting brass rod, cut to length, to act as strengthening pins.

I had already drilled the pilot holes as mentioned in my last post, so it was a case of opening them out to the correct diameter of 1.0mm for the brass rod.

The attached photo shows the brass rod inserted into one of the locating holes until it 'bottomed out'. I then marked the rod, withdrew it and cut just below the mark so the rod would be just under the surface of the hull when fixed. I continued in this manner until all holes had been drilled out and brass pins fitted.

I have found that I prefer using Polyfilla on this model for various reasons; its easy to wipe away excess when applying, its easily sanded when dry, it can be watered down, which is handy on smaller areas and it takes paint reasonably well.
