SUNDAY 26th March 2017 – The Adler Locomotive Build & Tender A very good afternoon to everyone. I hope that everyone has had a good week whatever you may have been up to. As in previous weeks I thought I would start this week’s update by way of a little “On this Day” entry. On This Day 26th March1484 William Caxton printed his translation of Aesop's Fables. As far as is known, Caxton was the first English person to work as a printer and the first to introduce a printing press into England. He was also the first English retailer of printed books.
This week’s build instalment has seen an age being spent on filling and sanding areas of the tender. So much work for what appears to be little progress but a vital task if any hope of getting a decent finish is to be expected. PICTURE 1We have 2 side rails to now fix to the top sides of the tender. These are expected to be glued in 3 dimensions but having been cut in 2 dimensions means the fit is far from perfect and if you want to get the best from this area of the build (it will be very visible in the finished model) a lot of fitting adjustments are required. In this picture we can see a significant gap which in theory could be filled later but if these parts are glued in place like this the outer sides do not line up correctly with the rear of the tender. PICTURE 2Some very careful filing along the already glued in parts (on which the arrow sits in this picture) allows the side rail to fit into place with next to no visible gap which is an improvement over the earlier dry fit. PICTURE 3This shows the 2 side rails glued and pinned into place on the tender. You can also see in this picture some of the earlier filling that was required in order to remove the gaps between the part tabs as much as possible. PICTURE 4Once happy with the location of the side rails I pinned them into place to ensure they dried exactly how I had set them in place. PICTURE 5Once dry I removed the pins and then used a liberal amount of filler in order to try and blend in the tab areas and the edge to edge joint. “RECOMMENDATION”While plastering on lots of filler may seem like a good idea its best to try and use as little as possible or (if you can get a good fit) none at all. The Ronseal filler I have switched too dries like “concrete” and while it can be rubbed back it takes an absolute age. It creates a load of fine dust and you want to ensure you do not start breathing that in for the sake of your health and wellbeing. PICTURE 6A very small amount of filler was required along this join simple because you are gluing the side pieces on at an angle so this form a small gap along this edge. PICTURE 7This is the view looking into the tender. While it took an age to get to this point I am really pleased that the time to get the side rails adjusted before fitting into place has paid off and it all looks quite neat and tidy. Once the filler is dry it will be back to the sandpaper and once that is complete the whole thing will be given a couple of coats of Sand n Seal prior to painting. PICTURES 8 & 9The final part of this week’s instalment has seen some of the control levers painted up and installed. And that completes my update for this week. Hope everyone has a good week and I will catch up again with you all very soon. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

Andy I think you are right. The locating tabs are the worst areas to manage as they are all cut "Short" so you end up with a dip across the join which will stand out under the pain finish. If anything it would have been better to have them cut oversize so you could rub them back later. Still it is what it is and I am trying to make the best of it Happy Modelling

Again Tony, another great update. I bet you are fed up with all the filling that's needed, but I know it will pay off later in the build. These sort of wooden kits need a lot of patience and time and sometimes it seems as though you are getting nowhere fast. I have in the past built a few wooden ship kits, but I find that there is too much preparation in getting some of the parts to fit right. I now tend to stick to building models that don't need a lot of time spent filling and sanding, I much prefer doing kits like my Honda and the upcoming Jaguar, where its just a matter of assembly, without having to do lots of filing, filling and painting, as well as not having to use glue. I suppose I have got a bit lazier in my old age, and prefer less mess when building models. Look forward to your next build session on this model. BUILDING - HONDA CB750 - HAYNES V8 VISIBLE ENGINE

Phil/Al Many thanks for the support. I thought i had taken on a fairly easy build ie no awkward planks to bend on a ship, but its a bit of a pain in terms of fit and the like. What is interesting is this is version 2 of the kit and its still not perfect. I work full time (plus) and have caring responsibilities so my dedicated build time is saturdays and beginning to get a bit down hearted that after 3 months its not progressed quite as far as I wanted. Still i am determined to produce sonething as an end result rather than than just bin it but its taking just that little longer than i had planned. Happy Modelling

SUNDAY 02nd April – The Adler Locomotive Build & Tender A very good afternoon to everyone. I hope that everyone has had a good week whatever you may have been up to. As in previous weeks I thought I would start this week’s update by way of a little “On this Day” entry. On This Day 02nd April1873 Almost 14 years after the United States, British trains were fitted with toilets, but only for sleeping cars. Day carriages were fitted in 1881. Third class passengers weren’t able to 'spend a penny' until 1886.
This week’s build has concentrated on the whole with further additions to the tender PICTURES 1, 2 & 3Lots of work and effort here to rub back all of that filler that I applied at the of last week’s build. What would have been good would have been having the interlocking tabs made slightly oversize so that these could be rubbed back rather than having to resort to filler to try and mask the issues of the short tabs leaving gaps. PICTURE 4We now have another 8 pre-cast pieces to add to the tender assemble. These parts are actually rather well cast with very little clean up required. Again an inconsistency in the kit in that some parts are “perfect” and others need quite a bit of attention to tidy up. PICTURE 54 of the precast parts will be glued into the area highlighted with the arrows in this picture. The parts are quite heavy and have to be self-supporting so consideration needs to be given to the type of glue used here. Super Glue (CA) on its own I do not think suitable. Epoxy (I use Devcon 5 minute) is very good but prior to drying can become very fluid and difficult to control. So my option is to use Timebond in the slots and Super Glue (CA) on the other touching areas. There is no direct weight applied to these areas on the finished tender so I think this combination of 2 adhesives should prove ok. PICTURE 6And once these 8 cast parts are in place this is how the lower half of the tender looks. PICTURE 7The next stage is the addition of 8 etch brass parts that represent the corner bracing. In this picture we can see the 4 parts that require some shaping before being applied. PICTURE 8Most modellers that use photo etch will at some point invest in a folding tool. I have had mine for some time now and it’s a model that was produced by Mission Models. It does for my needs very well. PICTURE 9And once all of the parts are shaped this is what they look like. PICTURE 10These corner pieces are then affixed to the lower tender corners. IN this case I have used Super Glue (CA) as I am gluing onto sealed wood that having been rubbed back is a nice shiny non porous finish ideal for CA PICTURE 11Here we can see what the upper part of the tender looks like now that it has received its very first coat of final colour. The Humbrol Rail Match green is a nightmare to use as its almost transparent and needs around 5 coats at least to get the depth of colour required PICTURE 12I am gearing up for a major painting session in the next week or so. Having tried A Vallejo Brass paint, it just does not give the finish of “real metal” so as much as I was trying to avoid it I am going to have to be the Alclad polished Brass I use. This means an Alclad white primer and micro filler on some of the wood parts, an alclad gloss black base coat followed by the Alclad polished brass colour itself. So in preparation for that I am about to make the Large wheel covers for the Loco. One each side and these are made up of 2 brass and 1 wood section as can be seen in this picture. PICTURE 13 “PROCEED WITH CARE”Something I think well worth a mention is that if you are working with Brass etch or cast parts that require clean-up make sure you work “Clean and Tidy”. As you can see in this picture some of the tabs that hold the etch parts into their fret are very fine and extremely sharp. If you have pets or youngsters at home (or even if you walk around barefoot) the last thing you want is for one of these fine brass parts sticking into you or the paw of a pet. Or worse ending up in something edible and being digested by mistake. They can cause some really serious issues so I always work on a paper kitchen towel and when done this is all folded up, taped up and binned. And that completes my update for this week. Hope everyone has a good week and I will catch up again with you all very soon. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling
