Hopefully this will get the cogs whirling!! I was born in 1727 & died in 1759. My father was a distinguished General. I am buried in Greenwich although I died in New France. I fought in the Austrian war of Succession,Flanders & Scotland where I helped suppress the Jacobites. I was a Brigade Major at 18 due to my earlier career. I am known for major disciplinary reforms. In the seven years war I was part of the aborted attackon Rochefort which led William Pitt to appoint me as Second in Command on a mission to capture Louisbourg. In 1758 at the age of 31 I was promoted to Brigadier General. Following the success of this mission I was given command of a force to capture Quebec,the mission was successful but I was killed....who am I? Dwight D Eisenhower was a five star general and George Washington was awarded the title postumously. Theodore Roosevelt was the medal of honour recipient. Judging by Brandywine and the fact that Washington never actually defeated Cornwallis in any battle during the 'Revolution' I'd say it was he that 'played' at being a general! Tee Hee! In March of 1944, Lancaster Mk11 'S' for Sugar was returning from a 300 bomber raid on Berlin when she was attacked and set on fire by a Ju88 night fighter. What happened next was unique in the entire history of Bomber Command's night assaults on Germany. What happened next and to whom? Flight Sergeant Nicholas Stephen Alkemade (Tail Gunner), bailed out at 18,000 feet without a parachute and survived with just a sprained leg. Alkemade was subsequently captured and interviewed by the Gestapo, who were initially suspicious of his claim to have fallen without a parachute until the wreckage of the aircraft was examined. He was then a celebrated POW before being repatriated in May 1945. (Reportedly, the orderly Germans were so impressed that Alkemade had bailed out without a parachute and lived that they gave him a certificate testifying to the fact.) Model boats built so far:-

Well I'll be....Hurrumph! Well done, I thought that one might have taken a little longer! I always thought that this story was the only ever example but there were around half a dozen or more miraculous escapes including Americans and a Russian who baled out from 20,000ft without a chute and landed on the very edge of a steep snow covered ravine and survived. I do think our tail gunner did get the lightest injuries out of all of them though. Well done d, over to you again.
