Small update on progress to lower the decks... Having now satisfied myself the deck levels are more to my liking I set to work adding additional supports to the deck supports... this was done using 6mm beech dowel ensuring a snug fit but also ensuring the fit didn't raise the decks any... Cool Cool .. Test fitted the decks again and all looked good... BigGrin BigGrin .. Have also cut, dry fitted and finally glued the additional dummy gun supports along the starboard side, this also meant they needed reducing in height due to the lower decks...Cool Cool .. Hopefully tomorrow will get the dummy supports fitted onto the port side and paint the inner surfaces black...BigGrin BigGrin

Happy building all...

Regards

Alan

Very impressive, well done. Your skill motivates me to improve on my novice level.
The carving skills I'll leave to the sculpture Blink

The cannons has great details embossed on it. It will be fun to see it reflected somewhere else on the side of the ship...Huh

Thanks for kind comments Admiral... am looking forward to planking the decks but I still have firmly in my mind the stain I chose to start with was far too dark and had to do a salvage operation... don't intend making that mistake again.... deck planking soon....Cool Cool

Short update, finally finished fitting the decks tonight and am a heck of a lot happier with their levels....BigGrin BigGrin .. Also, rather than just using offcuts of deck support strips for the pillars I decided to change it using 6mm beech dowel, staining them first with a light oak....Cool Cool .. Have not cut the support strips going across the hatches, decided to leave that for now as I will be leaving a slight overhang to act as a support for fitting the gratings, will help prevent the possibility of them falling through the hatch... they won't be seen when finished... Cool Cool

Finally tonight, I stained a couple of decking strips to see how they would look, used medium oak (left) and light oak.... Still can't decide which to use, hedging more towards the light oak.... opinions would be welcome.....Cool Cool .. Deck planking will start tomorrow....

Happy building all...

Regards

Alan

Excellent work AlanCool Cool Nice consistent depth to the ports and plenty of space for the waterway. The decking is a tough call, they are both nice.I know purists say light wood because of all the holystoning etc etc,but I think it would jar with the rest of the build.I think the lighter one but that's only 60/40.Definately think you are right to stain it.
Kind Regards Nigel

Thanks Nigel, appreciate the positive comments as always from you.... Looks as if we are both thinking along the same lines, just have a feeling the darker stain would be a little too dark.... will still ponder over it till tomorrow though....Cool Cool.. Would love the lighter one if I can recreate some of the darker patches to it too, would give a used look to the overall effect.... Cool Cool

Thanks again..

Hi Alan,
It's doable just a bit more work.If you stain the planks before fitting,Divide into three, stain one lot light, one lot dark and the last lot with a 50:50 mix of stain. Then lay them in a random pattern. They would want to be layed tight down to avoid sanding.
Kind Regards Nigel

Watching with interest to see how the decking looks.

Short update, have now made a start on the deck planking... Decided to stick to the measurements I used for the lower deck and marked lines across the deck at 47mm apart, also decided to leave my options open regarding the hatches on the higher decks, whether to have open or closed hatches therefore am going to plank the whole deck rather than just the centre section... Blink Blink .. Settled on using Tammy planks 1 x 4mm, each plank cut into 141mm lengths. Sanded each plank including the edges before giving 3 coats of light oak stain, each coat darkened the plank just a little... Caulked each edge with permanent marker and because it was stained first the bleed is just about non existent... Very happy with how it looks and will continue with it tomorrow.... Cool Cool. Will treenail when the deck is laid....

Happy building all....

Regards

Alan
