When I first started the diary I had no idea how it would go and have been quite shocked at the way it has grown.... where it will end up I have no idea but if it helps other builders then that makes it all worthwhile... Thanks again..... Regards Alan

Having finished issue 47 I decided not to go any further until I had finished protecting the hull.... Have spent quite a bit of time over the past few weeks experimenting with different finishes and my overriding objective was to ensure I pulled the grain out of the walnut and that the treenails could still be seen... Over the last couple of evenings I have been applying a medium oak stain, 2 coats in total with a light rubbing down in between and am really pleased with the results so far.... .. One side still to receive a second coat before moving onto applying a couple of coats of varnish.... .. Hopefully will post pics of the finished hull over the next couple of evenings.... Happy building all.. Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Kind Regards Nigel Thanks very much Nigel for your very positive comments, especially from such an experienced builder as yourself..... .. My intention is to use a satin varnish purely because it is a display piece, I think satin has a lovely soft appearance and on the test pieces I have done think it looks really good..... .. Thanks again.... Best regards Alan

Hi Alan, I too am varnishing my Hull, my original intention was to use Satin, but the Sapele did not finish well in the Satin, so I've switched to Matt on the Upper Hull (Sapele and Boxwood) and Satin on the Lower Hull (Maple). I agree with Nigel, the Ronseal is a top quality product and it's what I'm using (3 coats). We want these builds to stand the tests of time

Wasn't too happy using satin varnish on the Sapele, tests made it look a little patchy in places... Will also be using Ronseal matt on the upper hull and Ronseal satin on the lower... The varnishing stage will start tomorrow evening..... Regards Alan

Short update, have now finished staining the lower hull, 2 coats of medium oak followed by a light rub down with very fine grade sandpaper... Tomorrow will make a start on applying the Satin varnish, will see whether it will be 2 or 3 coats that will be needed... Happy building all.. Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Hi Alan. Totally agree with the earlier comments - a lovely 'authentic' looking shade of colour on the wood, it should set off the gold 'blingy-bits' beautifully later on! And belated congratulations too on your promotion, well deserved! Keep the pics coming!
