Haven't updated in a while couse of work commitments. I'm up to date on issues but behind on build progress which is not a major problem. Anyway I've had a day off today and managed to get some done

Very accurate work with the etch parts you have there!
I have just become a convert to etched extras since I dabbled into the plastic market again after a break of many years. Nice to see the etch following your build like a shadow, keep it up, all the best, Steve..

Finally I've finished planking the hull. It's not the best job in the world but it's my first wooden ship and I'm quiet pleased with it. Hopefully look a lot better once it's filled and sanded.

As u can probably see I've not used normal planking pins instead I used dressmaker pins this is because they are very thin and u don't have to pre drill the planks to put them on plus they don't split the wood. The only down side is that when u plank into ply it tends to bend the pins which once again is no prob as these are very cheap. Also I planked the the hull differently to the book and mike way. No real reason for this just thought I'd be different lol

BigGrin Hi Sean
nice job on the planking and we all have a favorite way of doing it,the pins well i used them for years and like you say dont split the wood [well rarelyLOL ]just a sore thumb to contend with from pushing them home.A word of warning/advice here if your thinking of using spray putty theres a cheap brand doing the rounds,i cant remember the brand, might be silver something as iv dumped the can but heres a discription, grey plastic cap with an overall yellow printed background paper [that cheap paper/printing the chinese are so good atBlink ]and its a grey colour when sprayed. The fumes from this stuff is lethal unless your using an industrial spray booth and breather system.

The ronseal filler works a treat and sands very easily as for undercoats/fillerprimers[spray putty] well any good brand will do iv been using halfords own brand lately.TBH any good undercoat is ok its coverage your after, you probably already know this but a good idea is to undercoat the hull and then sand it all off this will highlight any places to be filled [if any] and any high/low spots.Hope this helps

Cheers andy. I've taken out the pins and giving her a very very light sanding. Here's how she looks. You'll notice the the planking pattern I've used and to be honest was a bit of a pain the arse to do when ya got to the last planks

There are a couple of gaps that im not happy with but I'm hopefully the filler will sort it. Overall Im reasonably happy with it do far

dressmakers pins were used well before the fancey model making pins were on the go and you can get stronger ones that are harder to bend all you need for pussing them in is a dress maker thimble as said dont worrie about small gaps a lot of us gets them i use ronseal filler for mine natural pine sands about the same rate as the wood we are using

BigGrin Hi Sean
The hull looks sweet, the filller you have got should be fine but the one most of us talk about on here is the one pictured below. Its a 2 part filler like car filler and goes off in 10 minutes or so sandable after 30 mins apx.A good tip when using it is to mix very small amounts as it goes off suddenly in 1 go and work it into any blemishes by applying from left to right then right to left to make sure the hole is fully filled.Hope this helps

Regarding your lighting, why not have a look at Bamaaram's Victory build diary, he has done an amazing job fitting miniature lights and it looks like he has experience in this field, and could be the man to answer your questions. There are others but this was the build I was looking at most recently.
Happy building
David
P.S. I'm not actually building HMS Hood - I'm just following the build diaries out of a family interest in the ship herself. My work is cut out with the Victory build which I am way behind on at presentBigGrin
