Thanks Alan. It will be more of an issue with the second layer of planking. For the moment, with this layer which will not be seen, maybe I am being a bit obsessive?

Very pleased to get my mini-tool kit yesterday, with delivery 6. I think it was advertised as to come with delivery 8, no that was a pleasant surprise. Not a bad little piece of kit. Although I already had one, this is much smaller and lighter. Apart from that, just planks, planks and more planks!

Hi Captain, Looking good, and yes it is a hobby that can not be rushed. I am still doing the second planking as of #37 but received issue 44 and am itching to start this, but first things first. Keep up up the good work. Regards Claret Also working on: SOTS. Moebius 1/32 Flying Sub with PE & lights.

Thanks, Claret. I am ahead at the moment but I guess it will slow down as I do the planking. I like to let the glue dry out properly on each one before moving on, so only a few planks a day...

Hi Captain, That's all that is needed, I am doing the same! Was planning a little more planking tonight, but kept my girlfriend company taking the grand child on public transport (unable to drive because of leg still strapped in airboot) and we deviated via the local Wetherspoons. A few pints of Worsthornes Breweries, Collier's Clog later and I dare not attempt to take charge of any sharp instruments or glue. One word of advise though, invest in cocktail sticks Regards Claret Also working on: SOTS. Moebius 1/32 Flying Sub with PE & lights.

Thanks, Claret. Quite right, you should not be caught drunk in charge of a warship! I am watching everyone's progress with the trenailing and yes, I may have to buy a few packs of cocktail sticks at the 99p store.

Well, that's five rows of planking done and the sixth pinned up to dry after soaking and bending. Not much but it is so hot at the moment, it slows me down! Also doing outside painting and fussing over my allotment. I have tried to use only knot-free planks in this area where the gunports will be - in case the knots might make cutting the ports difficult. Sanding off any high spots as I go, so that I won't have a massive job at the end. The highest rib is protected with some polystyrene insulation foam. Captain David attached the following image(s):

Nice work on the planking David Good idea on the polystyrene. The ribs are very brittle and can easily snap Happy building rgd Martyn Building ? Completed. Soliei Royal . Sovereign of the Seas . Nice work David You can treat the first planking as a learning curve, however you don't need to be too nitpicky, the first planking is all about a good foundation for the second layer, not so much about making pretty patterns. You are quite right in taking your time though,it's not a race,it's about results. Kind Regards Nigel

Ten layers of planking done at the top. I have held off doing the bottom planking until now, waiting to work out a tool for sanding down the concave curves at the stern. Finally settled on a pole I found lying around that is 34mm diameter. Not sure where it came from, maybe a parasol pole or an oar. P60 aluminium oxide paper, attached with double-sided tape, did the job very quickly. Now for those tapered planks at the keel... Looking at the instructions, there seems to be nothing to attach the tapered tips at each end to. Captain David attached the following image(s):

Excellent work David .If you are concerned about the ends, may I suggest you glue some timber to either side of the keel and blend it to the profile. You are quite right, your keel is 4mm wide and so is the slot so the ends are theoretically in fresh air.Increasing the keel thickness is quite common practice when you haven't infilled the hull.Hope this is of some help. Kind Regards Nigel

Thanks guys. My thoughts exactly, Nigel. A bit of support put in now, 4mm ply scrap from the frets. Captain David attached the following image(s):

Doing the garboard planks. To shape the first one, I made a former out of some spare fret. It looks like the piece from rib 27 but I'm not sure... Anyway, it looked like the right profile without too much modification. A map pin at the tip enables me to hold the fine tip (after tapering) and then either pin it or use rubber bands to hold the rest down while it dries out. To get the twist in the aft piece, I am clamping around a scrap bit of wood after a long soak. If anyone has a better method I would be interested. Nice work David and a novel way of twisting the garboard plank .I don't think there is another way other than clamping to the ship itself, which is rather awkward. Kind Regards Nigel
