The decking will receive a wash of dark grey almost black to simulate the anti-fouling paint used on the real boats to protect the wood. The contrast will change, but the look of the wood won't. Good evening from 'The Dockyard'. This weeks update of my 1/48 scale U230 U-boat build sees further detail added to the casing. The attached photo shows the accommodation space hatch fitted in place. Looking forward. There are small etched pieces that make up the hinges that attach to the hatch, but I've decided to fit these at a later date whilst I had handle the boat during this stage. I also have to turn the boat upside down and rest it on the planking while I fit the rudders, fore and aft planes, prop shafts and propellers. Only when these components are fitted can I then upright the boat and fit all of the small, casing details including cleats, eyelets, the hinges as mentioned previously and the capstan. The next step was to turn my attention to the aft section of the casing. The first job was to clean up the aft navigation light housing, mark out and drill a locating hole in the casing and test fit for alignment. Aft navigation light housing fitted. I will fit a small LED into the housing and wire it up at a later stage. The housing is not fixed at this stage; it just provides a footprint to plank around and then be removed until a later date. Two sections of planking were then laid either side of the central planks. The housing was then fitted and a scalpel was run around the housing edge. Several passes were required before I had cut through the wood. The attached photo shows the surplus cut away.
