Hi Bernie All the references that I have checked show the anchor shank(shaft) as being square/rectangular in cross-section. My primary reference for anchors is John Harland's Seamanship in the Age of Sail. Possibly small boat anchors like the ones some of us have crafted for the launch might have a round shank. Having said that, looking at the pictures of Victory on the web suggests that the edges have been rounded off on the replica bower anchors stowed on the bows giving a rounded appearance, but there is also what I believe is an original anchor on the quay side which has a very rectangular shape. Anchors PictureI checked out my anchor which I constructed some time ago now and it is almost rectangular with a slight bevel on the edges and I think will stay like that! Mike T

As an addendum to Mikes post, the end of the shank needs to be gently rounded off. Rob Nolli Illigitimi Carborundum!!!Current Builds: HMS Victory, SV Thermopylae

i know this is in the wrong thread but its as close as i can get lol. The anchour to the launch, its a grapple anchor (correct me if im wrong) does it have 3 or 4 'hooks' to it. As we used size 14 fishing hooks for the eyelets to the cannons would i be able to use/destroy a fishing lure for the grapple to the launch. i dont know what weapons will be used in ww3 but ww4 will be sticks and stones.

hi I saw a number of grapples on Victory and they all were the same design just different sizes. note the steel is 4 pieces of square rod. “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Those grapnels were for throwing into the enemy rigging to pull ships together for boarding. But grapnel anchors are exactly the same. Rob Nolli Illigitimi Carborundum!!!Current Builds: HMS Victory, SV Thermopylae

Thanks Mr T. and others. I will sacrifice 1 of the grapnels/grappels(unsure) to make my life easier, and use a treble fishing hook. Its something that i could easily correct at the end of 2 years worth of building/crying. i dont know what weapons will be used in ww3 but ww4 will be sticks and stones.

These guys are based in Italy but they are pretty quick at delivery,as they have just returned from holidays then there may be a delay whilst they get out orders which have accumulated.Don't forget prices are in euros. Rob Nolli Illigitimi Carborundum!!!Current Builds: HMS Victory, SV Thermopylae
