Hi everyone,
It has become customary it seems, to improve on all of the parts that we receive, which is an excellent idea for many reasons; it makes the model look much much better, it allows us model makers to have a deeper scope to practice our skills, and in most cases it makes the said project that we are improving last longer until the next issue! I must thank everyone here for the ideas shared which have allowed me and countless others to improve their models; such as the cannon carriage and the launch so far.
I am just starting the barrel stack and was wondering if anyone has any improvements in mind for this? I know it is a relatively simple construction, but I figured as it will be on the forecastle it will be right in view so worth doing a little extra to it.
I'm thinking of using some tough waxed thread instead of the tape, and maybe scoring some more detailed lines in to simulate the wood effect. Any ideas?
Cheers, Tom

Hi Tom, Your idea sounds good. In their role as storage containers for just about everything, they would have taken quite a battering with being rolled around, hoisted, dropped, kicked, hammered and scratched. So giving them a rather distressed appearance would give them a more 'natural' worked appearance. Good idea! Happy building daffy09

I was originally planning on using some copper strips as Karl mentioned, however in the end I stained them with a light wood stain, then sanded most of it off to give the distressed appearance. The thick black thread works well too. Will post some photos when theyre done!
Thanks everyone, Tom

I was thinking of drilling them out, building false lids for them and filling them with rum.My wife has told me I need to go and see a doctor!OK maybe I won't fill them then. ArtfulBodger Previous Build: HMS. Bounty

Hmmmm..methinks a bit of bashing is going to be done by some people as those barrels don't look right, the staves should extend beyond the lids for a start. Please don't think I am criticizing your work in any way. Rob Nolli Illigitimi Carborundum!!!Current Builds: HMS Victory, SV Thermopylae

Good Point Rob.
Methinks there will be a challenge here where I can use my lathe to turn back the inside of the tops of the barrels to form a rim?
I think I will also use some 160 g/m2 card to make the metal bands for the barrels. Painting the card with Admiralty metallic black paint seemed to do the trick for the iron bands on the anchor stock.
Because I am a subscriber I haven't got this issue yet so there is time to consider this.

I think my solution will be to shorten the barrel. scribe in the plank joints and then add the lip with some modeling clay/epoxy putty. I recon the bands could be done with the plastic card this will also allow you to add rivet detail. not got mine yet us subscribers are 2nd class modelers “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain
