I have started collecting Hummer parts, (wow it's big) but I do not plan on starting construction until next winter. This project along with my stern wheeler is to keep me occupied until then. This will be another scratch build, at least this time the instruction book is well illustrated, if a bit short on text, a full material list is included. There will be a few differences to the instructions, e.g. they show the hull planked with balsa, I will use walnut strips. The deck is one piece, I will use 1 X 4mm strip. The first job is to trace the keel and frames from the drawing, then construction can start. Regards, Tony. Tony C attached the following image(s):

Hello all, The frames and keel have been traced and transferred to 5mm ply, then cut out (thank goodness for an electric coping saw). The frames have been secured to the keel, planking comes next. Regards Tony. Tony C attached the following image(s):

Hello all, A start has been made on the hull planking, this is the first time I have used walnut strip wood. I am pleasantly surprised how easy it is to work with, it could make my plank bender obsolete. I think I will try and do the planking so no filler is required, so that it can be finished with gloss varnish. Regards, Tony. Tony C attached the following image(s):

Hello all, A building/display stand has been made, I stained it mahogany and then varnished it. Snooker table baize is used for the hull rest and under the base. The deck planking is pretty well complete, and the access ladder to the oar decks has been made. The hull planking is progressing, so far a fair bit of sanding will be needed, but no filler. The ram bow is nearly finished, but the upper part needs some more work. Carving it was a bit of a so and so, not having laser cut balsa to help. More soon, Regards, Tony. Hello all, Slow but steady progress made. The bow and stern pieces completed. Hull planking completed and sanded, I have managed to avoid having to use filler. A first coat of varnish applied, and will be allowed to harden for at least 24 hours. I am quietly pleased the way the planking has come to life with the varnish. The next job will be 1000 grit wet and dry paper, I think I will probably need at least two more coats for the desired finish. More soon, Regards, Tony. P.S. The white marks are reflections from the camera flash. Tony C attached the following image(s):

Hello all, The first coat of varnish has been sanded with wet and dry paper, and a second coat of varnish applied. Sanding repeated with 800 & 100 grit wet and dry, and a third coat added which I think will do the trick. The photo does not show this to the best effect. The fighting tower has been made, in the kit it is laser etched. I made the tower from 1mm ply and planked it with 0.5 x 3mm strip plus a coat of natural oak stain. The platform is 1mm ply with 1 x 4mm walnut strip and 1 x 3mm lime strip. A ladder was made from 1 x 4mm walnut strip and 1mm brass wire rungs. The deck has been sanded and a coat of satin varnish applied, at least one more coat will be needed. The mast has been made and is being painted. The port side oar cover is made and in place, with a first coat of varnish applied. More soon. Regards, Tony. Tony C attached the following image(s):

Hi Karl, thanks for your comment, sadly this one is towards the stern. I believe the term fo'csle comes from medieval ships which did have fore and aft castles, from which troops cast various forms of mayhem at their opponents, prior to the invention of naval cannon. Kind regards, Tony.

Hello all, I am awaiting materials to finish my stern wheeler, so I can crack on with the bireme. The instructions showed patterned cloth for the shelter aft. Not having any patterned material I used paper with part of a test print from my printer. The hand rails have been completed. I had planned on finishing the oar cover on the stbd side. I am a great believer in the measure twice cut once adage, but somehow I managed to only drill 24 holes rather than 25, so I now have to order some more wood to re-do it. I have made a start on the oars, the instructions show them painted red, but I have decided to stain them dark oak and then varnish. The blocks and eye bolts for the rigging have arrived, so I can progress that when I wish. I plan on using sails from the Victory, to see how it will look. More soon, Regards, Tony.
