It sounds like something out of Star Wars - doctors are to attempt to save the lives of ten patients by putting them in ‘suspended animation’, when they are neither alive or dead. The procedure - which has been likened to what happened to Hans Solo in the Star Wars movie - will see all of the patients’ blood being replaced with cold saline solution, meaning their bodies will quickly cool to 10C and almost all cellular activity will stop.

This is not that new a procedure. The problem is though there is a limit to how long the cerebral tissue can remain cooled before it starts degenerating.I have seen surgeries done where the patient is cooled for up to 2 hours, but nothing longer than that.
