When looking at the videos of the D51 200, our kit, look at the front outside of the cab. There are two round windows above the fire box. Any takers?

Greetings, Instead of a new post I'll just add this here. There are four pictures of D51 498 getting an overhaul in the shop. Scroll down about 1/3 of the way. Brighten the pics up in your editing program. http://old-staff.cocolog...hotos/oomiya/index.html

Here's one for the detail freaks (my hand is raised). You can rotate 360 degrees and zoom in & out. Very nice. If anybody here has any good pictures of the detail variety, please share them. This cab is from D51-452. Enjoy, Mark http://www.360cities.net...japan#410.43,29.22,35.2

Mark It took me a while to work out what you were on about . I think you mean the round insets in the square windows . If it isn't , I'll tell you anyway because someone may be interested . The round things are centrifugal rain shifters , they whirl round and throw the rain off . They may even have a static blade , to wipe as well , but generally they rely on the centrifugal force . The rotating window tends to blend the view , they rotate quite fast. Commonly used on ships where the sea can come at the windows a bit solid , thus needing a bit of extra oomph , also not allowing a wiper blade to leave streaks of salt on the glass . On the same subject , aircraft commonly have high speed hydraulically driven wipers which also tend to throw the rain off . The blades in this case are not squeegies , but round , corrugated along their length . So now you are all experts on water shifting . Mike

My pleasure Mr. T. I have to say you must be busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. No offence intended. Hi Mike. Thanks for the reply. Many moons ago I was a Third Mate in the Merchant Marine so I'm familiar with the centrifugal windows. In this case I was referring to two circular windows above the rectangular windows and towards the center. Click the link below, and scroll forward to 2 minutes 25 seconds and pause, they are clearly visible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4rIEleqwnk
To the detail freaks you have to be careful which D51 picture /video you're looking at. There were 1115 D51s made. Look for D51-200 and D51-498 for the best pictures and videos. Best regards, Mark

Just found this site. It looks like the Japanese equivalent of this site. The first link will take you to page one. The second link will take you to one of the members build log and this guy went nuts on the detailing. This should be very helpful for anyone who is going to add extra detail. Enjoy. http://deagostini.jp/community/jkd_bbs/list.php

Several posts up I added a link to a D51 build log on a Japanese site where the Gentleman was doing an awesome detail number on the D51 200 kit. I just found his personal website and it is a doozie! Click on the top photo, D51, when you click each pic on the next page you are treated to even more detail pics. His other two locs are just as inspiring. Explore. Enjoy. Oh, by the way, I'm not just posting these links for S&Gs, I am in the build process but will not start a build log until it's well along. Thanks, Mark http://www.ne.jp/asahi/k...a/shumi/train/index.htm

Hi Mark, Whereabouts are you located? The only "big T" I can think of is Toronto?? Great links BTW. I agree, the detail that fellow is putting into his build is amazing. The Japanese seem to hit a Zen point sometimes with their models. The end result is simply amazing. It is sort of like a rock garden, where you can look at a model and get lost in the details. Tired, Old, and Cranky!

Hi Mark,
Why, Texas of course. And I like the way you described our Japanese friends. Do you think the red electric locomotive he did was a kit? He's obviously capable of scratch building one.
