I have decided to paint my model but am concerned that the instructions for either painting or applying a clear coat over the brass will not come until steps 91-100. It seems to me that if I paint the D51 as depicted on the assembly guides that when steps 91-100 come out, there will be a lot of disassembly to achieve the looks depicted in the guide. This could be a hassle if using thread lock and getting the screw sizes in the proper place during reassembly as well as not loosing them.

Can DeAgostini please release and post the painting guide now so we builders can plan ahead and perhaps paint as we go? I do not know about the other builders out there but I believe this will be a great help.

Consider the gluing of the number plates on in the early stage that have pre painted backgrounds with brass frames. If parts like these are glued on in the early assembly stages before you release the painting guide, it will create problems and a lot of additional work for disassembly, painting, and reassembly as well as for masking.

Also, will the painting guide steps 91-100 advise as to all colors as well as if the recommended paint is flat, semi gloss or satin?

Hi Dave
I decided to paint as I received the parts as to me its the way to go, just make sure you degrease everything first using your own methods or a good retail one.
Next will come a choice of undercoat , here you will have two choices a normal one or an etch type I went with the normal sort as etch primers contain nasty chemicals that are not good for breathing or general well being.
As for paint its your choice and what is available to you, but I will include the paints I am using below. I have chosen the 'working state' model so there are colour changes from grease and heat staining but if you want a pristine model just out of the yard after being built or refited then I think a more semi gloss black would look good.
The paints list I am using is below

Main colour/ Railmatch 2412 weathered black

Additional colours/ Vallejo Weathering a Steam Locomotive Paint Kit. Art 73.099
Also this which I already had but is a useful addition,
Vallejo Model Colour Val70150 Rust and Steel paint set.

I was wondering how many people choose to paint and how many like to leave it in brass. I suppose either way, one would need to spray on some sort of finish.

Firstly welcome to the forum and enjoy your build.
If you choose the brass or painted finish there will be choices to be made to stop the brass parts tarnishing or by painting to give a working look.
Also remember that the parts are sent with a protective coating of oil that will need removing before any finishing coats are applied.
If you are choosing the Brass finish most of the parts are brass but be aware that some of the parts are not solid brass but plated and extra care should be taken with them and use a good clear laquer to coat these parts ,
If painting as I am, I would recommend the paint and build method that's is in my build diary. Some people are using an etch primer but these need specialist spraying and masks as they contain harmful ingredients to do the etching proccess . There fore I am using a car undercoat with a matched railway paint colour.
Whatever choice of finish you choose there are several build diary's on here to peruse and gain ideas

The paint I have been using over here is 'RailMatch Acrlic #2412 weathered black ' There must be some railway model shops online over there that im sure will recommend a good alternative or even this paint it will be case of searching around though I think.

Good luck with the paint and im sure there will be starter kits for airbrushes like we can get here try to get a compressor with a choice of two airbrushes , double action is preferable , and try to get one airbrush with a cup for the paint and the other with a lower glass canister [ good for spraying large areas] and then its a case of practice and remember to thin the paint 1st

Hi Andy..

I was looking thru your build diary...very impressive. What did you use as a photo source, especially the interior cab details. I love the firebox door area. What did you use to achieve the rusted look? Did you have any problems with the screws after applying two coats of paint?

I'm trying to get my supplies together while waiting for my first shipment. I would assume us Yanks get double parts packs as the subscription is spread over 12 months and not 24.
