Lovely work Adam, and you're right, it's not a race it's all down to enjoying what you are doing. I have all the issues but have just finished issue 122 so like you am well behind but still progressing....  .. Also, we all find our own ways of doing things in a way that is most comfortable to each of us, its the results that count so keep doing as you are doing. She's coming along beautifully... Hi folks, It has been a productive month in the shipyard. Port & starboard side gun ports are now cut out. The additional wastage hull planking above the top row of gun ports has been removed. This was a very delicate evolution. A sharp craft knife is definitely required for this phase of the operation, with small shavings at a time required to be removed. I have included some pictures of that stage. Thankfully all 10 fingers remain intact, although I did manage to slice a finger and spilled some blood to the cause. My own fault for that one, wasn’t paying attention to what I was doing. Rib frames immediately adjacent to gun ports have been painted black. I have not fully paint the sections of exposed ribs that are located in the mid-ships area. From what I can determine looking ahead the top parts of these exposed ribs are trimmed flush with the deck later in the build. Fashioned extension pieces on the stern section of the keel that has not been previously planked with the bamboo. I have a problems with shaping 5mm lengths of bamboo planks to fit, so instead I shaped an ice cream stick. Worked out quite well as I was able to glue it securely to the exposed keel section. Just need to apply some filler (or softer timber) in order to obtain a curved shape. I did a dry test fit of the stern post section that is supplied in the kit. I found that the supplied piece as way too wide to fit into the slot at the stern between the planks. We are only talking no more than 1mm over thickness, but it is enough to be an annoyance. As a temporary measure I made a stern post from left over scrap pieces, and it fits snugly. I need this as a guide for tapering the planks to the stern post. I have marked out a reference line at the stern where the planks need to be tapered toward the stern post (as per Issue 34 Step 18 inset diagram). The line I have drawn is 5mm from the end of the planks, so hopefully this is enough of a curved shape to accommodate the second layer of planks. This step in the instructions does not appear to include the requirement to taper the planks at the base of the keel back to frame 21. So, I have also marked out where I think I need to taper the bottom section of the keel starting at 5mm from the corner (at the stern post) and reducing in with to coincide with frame 21. (It is here where the first layer of planks are horizontal and begin to twist to vertical at the stern post). So, I guess that the final tapering of the keel will be a test of patience and a methodical few hours with a file and sandpaper to achieve the required shape. Anyhow, onwards and upwards as they say. Hi folks, A few months has past by since my update, but the build is continuing at a gentle pace. I have laid as much as I can of the second layer of sapele strips to the upper section of the hull. I had test fitted the stern gallery sections to mark out where the sapele strips end, thus I have been able to cover more of the hull than is required for this part of the build. Just need to compete the sapele when the gallery is installed. (From the gallery test fit, there seems to be much work ahead in obtaining a flush finish as there were gaps a plenty – some you could drive a Mac truck through. But I will worry about that when the time comes). The sapele was prepped by giving the edges a light sand with 240 grit paper. This was to remove the burrs and splinters to ensure a snug fit between the strips. I used a black permanent marker (with a chisel shaped nib) to achieve the caulking finish. Sanding the edges also ensured that the marker did not bleed into the strips. I ran the marker along the length on one edge only and at both ends of the strip. The finished result of the sapele at the bow ended up to be a mixed bag. I had to taper the third row to ensure that there was no clinkering of the strip. This had the net result of the following planks rising up at the bow. A small strip had to be laid to ensure that the width of the sapele was 30mm around the bow section. I don’t think that this will be a major drama as it will either be covered with side panels for the beak platform. Now it’s on to laying the basswood on the hull below the waterline. The build guide is scant when it comes to instructions on this section, so much artistic licence is required. I will be painting this area when required, so any faux pas can be covered. Oh, if anyone has instruction, hints & tips on how to use a planking fan, I would be very appreciative if some pictorial guidance can be posted. So, onwards and upwards. Crikey, it has been way too long since my last post, so I thought I had better provide an update. Not that there has been monumental progress for as you can see I am still progressing with the second layer of hull planking. There has not been an opportunity to pay as much attention as I would like to in getting this phase of the build completed. I can only spend a couple of hours each week or so, which is quite frustrating. Anyhow, the first 14 rows from the sapele down have been laid and I am now making my way from the keel inwards. Keeping the planks in place with pins was somewhat problematic as I found it difficult to tack the pins to the bamboo. So, I am using blue painter’s tape as well as plastic card off-cuts. This has enabled me to achieve a snug and even fit between the rows, especially at the bow and stern. I am also using an old bath towel as a cushion. By rolling the towel from one end, I can prop up the hull to the desired position. It’s working quite well for me and doesn’t take up any extra space on the workbench. I made an attempt at applying droppers and stealers at the bow and keel, but this was an epic fail and not worthy of any photo graphics. Appreciate that this forum encourages "warts and all", but my attempt was simply disastrous. I just could not apply the theory of droppers and stealers on paper into practice and ended up wasting planking strips. So, some of the tapered planks are ending in needle points even though that is not ideal. So far, the application of the second row of planks on the hull is the only part where the step-by-step instructions are somewhat limited. I guess that this opens the door for some artistic licence and interpretation on behalf of each builder to achieve the final outcome that they are happy with. I still have a month or two ahead of me before I am at the stage of completing this phase of the build, as work and other commitments continue to get in the way. Well that’s all for now, enjoy.
