Issue 92 - Contains diecast decorations for the left-hand side of the hull.

Smooth the surfaces of all the decorations with a file to eliminate any irregularities, then coat them with metal primer and paint then gold.

Hull frames:

Take one of the 1.5x1.5x300mm birch strips that you received with Issue 67 and smooth it with fine-grained sanding block on all four sides, then paint three of the four sides of the strip gold. (The vertical frames for the hull are cut from this strip).

Cut to size six pieces of the gold strip, apply glue onto the side free of paint and fix them on the front of the left-hand side of the hull, in the positions indicated in the instructions. Then fix six more vertical frames on the right-hand side of the hull, in the same position to those in the previous step.

Fitting the decorations:

Glue a seahorse PD30 decoration on the left-hand side of the hull, 2mm from the left of the first vertical frame of the first gun port of the deck. In the same way, fix a PD29 and a PD30 in the space between the first and the second gun port of the deck, 1mm from the vertical frames.

Fix three more pairs of decorations PD29 and PD30 in the three left-hand side sections of the hull, between the second and the fifth gun port of the deck.

Continue assembling the decorations, fixing three pairs of PD29 and PD30 pieces between the fifth and eighth gun port of the deck.

Finally, fix two pairs of decorations PD29 and PD30 on the aft section of the left-hand side of the hull, between the eighth and tenth gun port of the deck.

Keep the spare PD29 for use in a future stage.

Now, you can deal with the dolphin-shaped decorations PD31 and PD32.

Fix a piece PD31 and a piece PD32 on the forward section of the left-hand side of the hull, in the positions shown, the decorations must be set 1mm from the frames.

Fix another two decorations PD31 and PD32 on the left-hand side of the hull, following the previous step.

Moving on to the stern section of the hull, fix four pairs of decorations PD31 and PD32 in the positions shown.

Issue 94 - Contains the portside (left) chainwales, rigging blocks and rigging parts.

Fitting the the portside chainwales of the mizzen, fore and main masts.

The numbers on the parts photo identify the three left-hand side chainwales of your model. The arrow on the die indicates how the pieces should be oriented on the hull, with reference to the bow.

Cut the foremast chainwale 156 from the fret, smooth any splinters or laser burn from the surfaces, then paint it a sapele colour (but not the edge which will be glued to the hull).

Test-fit the fore chainwale between the two frames indicated in the instructions, placing it 16mm from the spur and check that its curved edge fits neatly against the hull, and if necessary, smooth the inner edge of chainwale with a finegrained sanding-block so that it neatly fits the curvature of the hull.

Glue the foremast chainwale in position, ensure that it is correctly oriented.

Cut the mainmast chainwale 157 from the fret, smooth any splinters or laser burn from the surfaces, then paint it a sapele colour (but not the edge which wil be glued to the hull).

Test-fit the main chainwale beneath the first gold frame, placing it 8mm from the entry hatch of the ship. Make sure that the edge fits the hull neatly, and if necessary, smooth the inner edge of chainwale with a finegrained sanding-block so that it neatly fits the curvature of the hull.

Glue the main chainwale in position, ensure that it is correctly oriented.

Cut the mizzenmast chainwale 158 from the fret, smooth any splinters or laser burn from the surfaces, then paint it a sapele colour (but not the edge which will be glued to the hull).

To fix the mizzen chainwale in place, you'll need to cut the top of the two vertical frames indicated in the photo, removing a 2mm-long piece from each of them. Then glue the mizzenmast chainwale in the space created between them and the horizontal frame above, placing it 7mm from the second quarter gallery of the left-hand side of the model.

Now, take the cannon you assembled in Issue 93. Then, take a piece of metal wire, four blocks and four eyebolts left over from recent issues. Following the instructions in Issue 61, complete the cannon with two eyebolts and blocks. Finally, prepare a pair of blocks with double loops.

Carefully store the remaining parts and keep the blocks with the cannon.

Issue 95 - Contains diecast decorations, wooden strips and the starboard (right) chainwale platforms.

Smooth the surfaces of all the decorations with a metal file to eliminate any burrs irregularities, then coat them with metal primer and paint them gold.

Glue a PD29 decoration onto the right-hand side of the hull, 2mm from the right-hand vertical frame of the first gun port.
In a similar fashion, fix a decoration PD29 and a decoration PD30 in the space between the first and the second gun ports, 1mm from the vertical frames.

Fix three more pairs of decorations PD29 and PD30 into the three sections of the right-hand side of the hull, between the second and the fifth gun ports.

Fix three pairs of PD29 and PD30 between the fifth and eighth gun ports.

Fix two pairs of decorations PD29 and PD30 on the righthand side of the aft section of the hull, between the eighth and tenth gun ports.

In total you should have fixed 10 PD29 decorations and nine PD30 decorations. Keep the remaining PD30 decoration for a future assembly session.

Chainwale platforms:

Identify the three right-hand side chainwale platform parts. The arrow on the fret indicates how all three pieces should be placed on the hull relative to the position of the bow.

Cut out the foremast chainwale 164 from the fret. Smooth any splinters or laser burn from the surfaces, then paint it a sapele colour (but not the edge which will be glued to the hull).

Test-fit and if necessary, smooth the inner edge of chainwale with a finegrained sanding-block so that it neatly fits the curvature of the hull. Then glue the chainwale in the position as shown, placing it 16mm from the spur. Check that the foremast right-hand side chainwale 164 is perfectly aligned with the left-hand foremast chainwale 156 already fixed on the opposite side of the hull.

Cut the mainmast chainwale 165 from the fret.

Then glue the chainwale below the first gold frame, placing it 8mm from the hatchway.Check that the mainmast right-hand side chainwale 165 is perfectly aligned with the mainmast chainwale 157 that you fixed on the left-hand side already fixed in position on the oposite side of the hull.

Cut out the mizzenmast chainwale 166 from the fret. Smooth any splinters or laser burn from the surfaces, then paint it a sapele colour (but not the edge which will be glued to the hull).

To mount the mizzenmast chainwale in the correct position you will need to cut the top of the two vertical frames indicated in the photo, removing a 2mm-long piece from each.

Now test-fit and if necessary, smooth the inner edge of chainwale with a finegrained sanding-block so that it neatly fits the curvature of the hull. Then glue the mizzenmast chainwale in the space that you have created, placing it 7mm from the second right-hand side quarter gallery of your model.

Carefully store the remaining parts for future use.

Issue 96 - Contains brass chain, deadeyes, pin-nails and brass wire.

Preparing and assembling the deadeyes:

Take the 60 deadeyes that came with this issue. Clear out the three holes of each deadeye using a 1mm drill bit, then smooth them with fine-grained sandpaper.

Paint all 60 deadeyes (including the holes) with a dark walnut woodstain or dark brown paint.

Take the brass wire that you received with this issue and cut off 56 piecese 35mm long. Then burnish them black using a brass blackening fluid, (remember to degrease components before blackening).

Take the chain that came with this issue, cut 32 lengths 25mm long (identified by the code 169A) and 24 lengths 32mm long (code 169B). Then burnish the chain lengths black and keep them separate.

The deadeyes, to be mounted on the chainwales, must be given a circle of brass wire and hook.

Take one of the pieces of wire that you prepared earlier and wrap it around a deadeye. Use long-nosed pliers to twist the ends of the wire for 3mm. Arrange the deadeye within the loop so that there are two holes above, and one below, as shown.
Cut off one end of the wire close to the twisted part. Shape the other end into a hook by wrapping it around a 1mm drill bit, then snip-off the excess wire.

Using the small hook, join the deadeye to the first ring of one of the pieces of 25mm-long chain (169A) that you prepared earlier. With long-nosed pliers, close the small hook and fix the end of the wire by wrapping it around the twisted part.

Repeat to join a deadeye onto each of the 56 lengths of chain (169A and 169B ) prepared in advance and carefully store the four remaining deadeyes.

Completing mainmast left-hand side chainwale platform.

Take the two 2x2x300mm strips of birch that came with Issue 95. Smooth with sandpaper, then paint them a sapele colour.
Then cut a 110mm-long piece from one of the two strips. This piece of the strip will later be fixed on the front of the left-hand side mainmast chainwale.

Without using glue, set the strip on the front of the left-hand side (port) mainmast chainwale, and mark the position of the small indentations on the edge of the chainwale on the strip with a pencil.
With a round file, make small grooves on the strip at the pencil marks. Put the strip back on the chainwale and check that the grooves of the two pieces are aligned.

Apply glue into the first small groove of the mainmast chainwale, take a piece of 32mm-long chain with its deadeye (169B) and fit the brass wire of the deadeye inside the groove of the chainwale so that the deadeye sits snugly upon the chainwale platform.

In a similar way, fix 11 more deadeyes with a 32mm-long chain (169B) on the chainwale platform. Then glue the inside edge of the platform strip made earlier and glue it across the front of the chainwale platform, covering the grooves and chains.

Carefully store the remaining parts and the stained 2x2x300mm strips for future use, and keep the remaining 169A and 69B deadeye chain assemblies separately bagged.

The chainwale platforms of the right-hand (starboard) side are completed in Issue 100 and 101.

Future issues:

Issue 97 - Comtains deadeyes, buckets and parts to make the foremast lower fighting top.

Issue 98 - Contains bamboo dowel, dummy cannon, pinrail parts and belay pins.

Issue 99 - Contains basswood strips, dummy cannon and trucks.

Issue 98 - Contains bamboo rod, half-cannons, pinrail parts and belay pins.

Take the 12 half-cannons (identified with the code 170) and the eight belay pins and smooth their surfaces with a file to eliminate any irregularities.

Take one of the 2x300mm-diameter wooden rods that came with this issue and cut 12 segments 10mm long. The pieces are identified by the code 170a, Then glue a rod into the stock end of each cannon as shown to create a spigot.

Put a coat of metal primer on the half-cannons and belay pins, then paint the half-cannons bronze and the belay pins a light wood colour.

The 12 half-cannons are for the left-hand side of the model and should be placed into the 5 forward and 7 aft gun ports as indicated.
Use a 2mm bit to drill a spigot hole into the black-painted reinforcement inside each of the 12 gun ports you wil be fitting a cannon into this time.
It is important that the hole is exactly centred. (You may find this easier if you make a card or ply template that fits the aperture of your gun ports, which has a 2mm hole in its centre. this will provide a central postion to each of the cannon).

Test-fit a cannon, then apply a little glue onto the wooden spigot end, and fix each cannon in turn into the 12 gun ports indicated on the left side of the model.

Making the curved pinrail:

Cut parts 171 and 172 of the pinrail of the forecastle from the fret. Sand the edges of pieces 171 and 172 to remove the blacks laser burn, then paint the four pieces of the pinrail a sapele colour.

Now glue the three pieces 172 at the centre and at the ends of part 171, placing them perpendicular to the latter, as shown in the photos.

Glue the forecastle deck pinrail in the location shown, making sure it is central and level with the handrail.

Test-fit then glue each of the belay pins into the pinrail, and If necessary, slightly open out the holes with the help of a round needle file.

Carefully store the remaining fret fret and wooden rod.

Issue 99 - Contains basswood strips, half-cannons and trucks.

As before, add wooden spigot rods to the 12 half-cannon, then coat them with metal primer and paint them bronze.

These 12 half-cannons are for the right-hand side of the model and should be placed into the 5 forward and 7 aft gun ports as indicated.
Use a 2mm bit to drill a spigot hole into the black-painted reinforcement inside each of the 12 gun ports you wil be fitting a cannon into this time. It is important that the hole is exactly centred.

Fitting the bow gunwales:

Take the 1.5x4x300mm basswood strip that came with this issue and smooth its surfaces with a fine-grained sanding-block.

Make the gunwales of the bow platform with the 1.5x4 strip, which will be fixed in the position shown in the photos.

Glue the strip above the left-hand wall of the platform, making sure that the inner edge of the strip is flush with the wall itself, then cut off the excess strip and smooth the end. Repeat to fit a gunwale strip on the opposite side of the bow platform.

With the remaining length of the 1.5x4mm strip, make five 4x2mm segments, which we have identified with the code 175.
Glue the five pieces 175 on the gunwale to match the uprights below. Then take five of the trucks that came with this issue and glue them on the five pieces 175, as shown in the photo. Repeat on the opposite bow gunwale strip.

Paint the gunwale, parts 175 and the trucks on both side of the model, in gold, and also paint the strips along the side edges of the front section of the bow platform, gold.

Note - That the 10 bow eyebolts shown in place on the bow platform (in the Step 23/24 photos), are placed later on in the build, at Step 06 of Issue 114.

Making the cranes:

Take the 5x5x300mm basswood strip that came with this issue. With a saw and a mitre block, cut two segments 22mm long from the strip. These will serve to make the cranes of the ship.

On one face of one of the two pieces of strip, draw the four lines shown in the photo with a pencil, following the measurements given.

Use an 0.8mm drill bit to make four holes through the piece of strip. The holes should be within the lines that you drew.
Now, with the point of a craft knife, make two small vertical cuts, connecting the holes in pairs. Repeat this on the opposite side of the piece, then smooth the cuts with the tip of a round file.

Paint the two cranes a sapele colour. Then take two eyebolts from those that you received with Issue 63 and burnish or paint them metallic black.

Use a 0.5mm drill bit to make a hole on each of the cranes, in the position shown in the first photo. Glue the two eyebolts into the holes, positioning them as shown in the photos.

Repeat to meake a second crane from the remaining 22mm length.

Glue a crane on the left-hand hip of the bow of the model with the eyebolt facing down. Look carefully at the photos to locate their exact position. Glue the second crane on the right-hand hip of the bow, symmetrical to the first.

Carefully store the remaining parts.

Future issues:

Issue 100 - Contains diecast decorations for the left-hand side of the hull.

Issue 101 - Contains diecast decorations for the right-hand side of the hull and a cannon kit.

Issue 102 - Contains diecast decorations for the left-hand side of the hull and a cannon kit.
