I took bought an extra Issue 1 to test spraying it with a clear coat.

1. It makes the piece look 100 times better. It pops the colors while adding a high gloss. It also fills the seems on the joins nicely as well as masking whatever gluing evidence you might have. And it obviously solves the glossy sticker on matt base difference.

2. Allthough most of the wing came out good looking some spots did not.I am goin to guess this is due to the molding residue. I did not try prepping the surface before hand.On one spot it also looks like the decals already on the pieces responded to the spray paint.

Based on the difference, spraying the body with a clear coat is very tempting but it obviously risks completely spoiling a piece if it blunders.

Was wondering if anyone had thoughts on this and maybe preperation suggestions? Unfortunately I do not have another test piece and my local CNA is out of issue 1 for more test pieces.

Ok, we will leave the experimenting to you. Warthog replied to my post about washing the parts in mild soapy water to remove the releasing agent and he said we must go for it. I used to do it on all my plastic model kits and wil also be doing it on my Italeri PT boat when I get round to it. Not enough time in my day/week/month What clear coat did you use? I will try and do some research into this.

In my experience of varnishing models its all trial and error. Some solutions eat away at decals and stickers so you have to be careful.

I probably will not risk it myself because of the type of stickers used. If it were all decals then I would go for it.

In my experience with clear coats/ varnishing I tend to use Humbrol Gloss acrylic varnish over Tamiya and Humbrol spray. then after applying decals finish with more Gloss coats or Matt varnish if military etc.

I will be using this process for my Hummer build but unfortunately it wouldn't work on the Red Bull model.

If your lucky and you have some spare issue 1's then it's wise to experiment when clear coating as any parts that have already been painted and decalled as with issue 1 may react to different types of clear coating. Aquas sprays or varnishes if applying with an airbrush are the best option.

I have tried Halfords (hard to explain what they specialise in but just look up Halfords.co.uk to see) clear lacquer on different types of plastics with great results but that's only because I know what paint I'm putting down to begin with that is compatible with Halfords clear lacquer but I wouldn't use it direct onto the RB7 front wing due to not knowing the paint type that has been used.

I managed to get another spare wing Which I washed in a mild soap. Spray result was much better but unfortunately where ever the pre-printed stickers/decals does not bind 100% to the plastic it reacts to the Clear coat and bubbles. In this case on the front wing there appears to be a few such cases where the sticker goes over grooves in the plastic. Some parts came out beautifully where others has small showings of imperfections, and my OCD will drive me nuts.The clear coat also had difficulty taking to the plain black parts where there was no paint.

Yeah unfortunately trying to do it now will be on my parts received via subscription so it is very risky. And I also don't want to keep on bleeding money on test parts. It also looks like this is something that will have to be done in a well planned order of the build to get the best result. So cant really do testing later and then spray the complete body unless I strip it down again afterward?
