So you don't lose them and it gives you an idea on which way round to fit them....  Spencer

In later stages other parts of the engine will be fitted and the cam covers will need to be removed to allow for the proper fitting of the other engine parts. Plus it gives you an idea on how to fit them. It is up to you wether you fit them or not and wait for them to be placed into position at a later stage but better to have them secured to the engine block than lose them. Spencer
