Considering that a successor is being sought, why is he even being allowed to make such decisions?

It's probably a threat so that Monza come up with the cash to host and upgrade the facilities as he did with Silverstone. Spencer

It might not go down well with the Tifosi, as the venue has held the Italian GP every year since the world championship started in 1950, apart from 1980 when the event went to Imola.
There are reports that the Italian TV ratings for F1 have dropped alarmingly, which might make it hard to organise a viable commercial package, and its likely that Italian audiences have switched off because of Ferrari not being on pole or winning races of late.
