Hi there fellow shipbuilders.
Saw this one advertised on TV today and wild horses couldn't keep me getting out to WHSmith to purchase this first issue. U boats have always had a strong fascination for me and my previous attempt at building one from card was doomed almost as soon as I started it.
So, this particular model is based on the U-96 which was a Type VII-C which was launched on August 1st 1940 and survived all its missions and was sunk at Wilhelmshaven in 1945 by US bombers after being decommissioned.
This submarine became the subject of the 1973 book 'Das Boot' which was made into a film of the same name and released in 1981.
The dimensions of the finished model will be 140cm in length and 13cm wide.
I shall be starting a build diary for this one, however, I intend to wait for a few weeks - or as long as I can before the temptation gets the better of me - before starting so as to get enough of the keel to get stuck into.

That's a healthy looking first issue!
I may have to wander down to my vendor and see what the first parts look like close up? I have seen elsewhere that a resin insert will be available for the torpedo room some-time soon?

Looking at some of the web sites it appears this model has already been running Germany for a few months now. From what I can see one of the main issues raised is the fact there are only 2 detailed compartments. A look of talk of why the torpedo room was not opened as a detailed area. In response to this the following company are offering a conversion set to allow the modeller to open and detail this section. All of the parts do add up to a fairly pricy conversion set in my humble view but guess it's down to the builder as to what they add. Thanks Tony, that's really useful and something that I hadn't given any thought to. Yes, it would make a tremendous difference to the finished result to have a cutaway of the forward torpedo room. I've looked at the site and will do some hard thinking about whether or not go down that road. I think the extra expense would be worth it, but I have serious concerns about making such a 'mod' because I'm no expert at modelling and without any extra instructions about how to proceed with the conversion, I think I run the risk of compromising the finished build. Having said that though, the model is plank on frame, so if if I make a serious error, it's only a matter of re-planking the hull in that area and all would be rectified.
So thanks for the link Tony, I think I may have just talked myself into trying it.

PS: Just to add to my comment about not being an expert at modelling and the need for instructions on how to build, as an example, I bought the gallery conversion for my DeAg HMS Victory and she's been sitting idle now (nearly a year) because I have no idea of how to go ahead with fitting it, and the build guide that was suggested for it hasn't been forthcoming.

Get your self some MDF sealer such as Rustins quick dryng MDF clear sealer, as you'll likley be needing it.

Thanks for the link Tomick. I feel that I should make an apology here because I obviously didn't follow the guide through to the fitting - only got as far as the painting - sorry about that, part impatience and part forgetfulness, so will be able to move on with that one now.
And thanks for the 'heads up' on the MDF sealer, I'll have get myself some.

Thanks for the link Tony, that was interesting. After seeing that I'm now tempted to make a start earlier than I expected too, but I still want to hold on until I make up my mind definitely on the forward torpedo room conversion. I think I'll buy the MDF parts for the conversion first, so they can be added into the build at the correct stage, then it won't hold me up on the rest of the build.

I too saw this ad on TV last night, and was tempted the second I saw it...
A quick question I have is, it looks like this is over 150 issues! Is it 1 per week? or 2 per month?
As it stands, even at weekly issues, that's 3 years to complete! Is that standard for these type of kits?
I'm still tempted, but the timescale is putting me off...

Are Hachette known for keeping these kind of issues going right through to the final issue?
I am sure I have read about companies pulling the plug on this type of thing 2/3rds of the way through its life...That would be awful to spend 2 years building it, and then it getting pulled near the end!
It does look really nice though, but the 3 year build time, and the £895 price tag are currently dissuading me slightly :(

It's unlikely to be pulled, the cost is high as in all partworks but the payments are spread out for affordability, some people would prefer this to getting the complete kit in one go, even if there was one. Steve
