okay im up to issue 9 so i have the first 2 parts of the false keel and the ribs.

thing is im already noticing a bend along the false keel and i dont have a bath tub to soak it in to be able to straighten it.

im betting that with the 3rd peice of the false keel its going to get worse so if anyone can advise on how to straight then out i would really appreciate it.

thanks in advance.

also as a matter of interest as there has been some upraw about this, i think that my rib 15 is actually alright and not needing aload of sanding. think i got lucky with that one.

also would you advice filling the bow with balsa wood?

Hi secretreeve! BigGrin

Sorry you've found you keels bent you should use a jig to hold the keel straight if you let it rest on a bench without a jig it will bend over time. Since you can't soak it try steaming it, but be very careful first make a jig plank of wood and brackets will do, set one side of the brackets first using a straight edge like a spirit level screw them in place then use a rib to space the other side brackets and screw them in place.

If you have a steam clearer use that to steam the keel and soften it or use an iron on steam boost held 2 to 3 inches off from the ply, steam both sides. When it starts to soften and bend place in the jig and let it dry then check it, should help to straighten it.

DON'T OVER STEAM IT OR THE PLY WILL SEPARATE! Practice on a piece of scrap 4mm ply first.

Adding balsa filling at the bow and stern helps as you have more surface area to glue the planks to at the tight bends.

P.S. Don't let the wife see you using a steam cleaner or iron or it's curtains for you mate!Laugh

You don't need a bathtub to soak a relatively small piece of wood! Just soak it in ANY vessel large enough to accommodate it and then lay it on a flat surface with a heavy object over it until it dries. That should do it.

Although experienced modellers will probably have a much better way of resolving the problem :-)

thanks for the 2 replies.

i wouldnt worry about the wife, my other half is male and couldnt really care less what it takes to get this model right considering its cost.

i will try both. the second peice of the false keel had a bend in it and i steamed it and stuck it between the top of my main pc and upturned another pc ontop of it. almost of it 100% but since attatching both peices of the false keep it is bending slightly more. so i will have to soak it or steam it and place it in a jig once i have one built.

again, thanks for the replies and will get on it asap.

of course i have the endeavour to keep me busy in the mean time haha. so its not 100% urgent so lots of time to get it nice and striaght. thanks again.
