well i thought it was about time to start the Model Airways Wright Flyer that i purchased (for my 2 girls to give me on my birthday BigGrin)

thought it would be a good start before attempting the Sopwith Camel. (another birthday present from the girls to me or should i really say from me to me!)

so here are a few pics of the box contents

im missing a basswood sheet! but having contacted Model Airways a new one is on its way.
therefore little progress to start with, but have managed to build the wing frame JIG and have started to build the leading edge and main spare of the top wing.
the ribs are extremely delicate and model airways have accounted for possible breakages by suppling more than is required to finish the wings.

My kid brother built one. It looked really nice, but it didn't bear up well under the scrutiny of a 4 year old boy. The Flyer is one of their better kits. I've been hankering for a Jenny for years, but I need another model kit like I need yet another hole drilled in my already vacuous head!

Dan

This looks a very interesting build.

Modelexpo really do produce some lovely kits and if you time your purchases right quite often some very big discounts.

While this or the camel are on my wish list that point of buying will be some way off I think as I am running out of space LOL

Hope you enjoy your build.
Happy Modelling

I will be watching this with interest.I have this kit and the Sopwith Camel.I am just about finished with the 1:16 Fokker DR1 and that was quite a challenge to build.I am going to tackle the Camel next.I have heard the Flyer is VERY fragile once finished.

thanks for the interest guys.
im surprised at how quick ive managed to build the upper wing considering the amount of ribs used! and although looks fragile is surprisingly strong once together! although as you say Mark (mr crazy Yank)it wont stand up to the scrutiny of little hands Laugh
so the next part to build is the lower wing, which is a little more complex having to hold the pilot support, engine & wing warping pulleys etc.

regards
Dan

Dan

Your certainly a dab-hand at working on such delicate looking parts.

A very neat finish to the work on the wings which is very impressive indeed.

Happy Modelling

thanks for the kind comments guys.
well progress has been slow. only managed a few bits of photo etch and the two elevators.
waiting for some aluminium tubing to arrive before i commence the wing warping wires etc, which looks extremely confusing Confused to do, but im sure it will work out in the end.
