Under new regulations from the Civil Aviation Authority, airfields can now offer members of the public the chance to take a back seat in a Second World War fighter plane, to take part in dogfight re-enactments of Second World War featuring Spitfires — provided the risks have been explained to them properly.

The first group to grab its chance is Boultbee Flight Academy, at Goodwood Aerodrome, West Sussex.

As for the risks, the chance of dying on a modern Spitfire flight is about one in 300,000.

The machines are sent for three months of checks at Duxford Aerodrome each year, and serviced after every 25 hours in the air. If a forced landing is necessary the pilots can bring them down in any field with a 100-yard strip of grass.

A CAA spokesman said: “If you’re a Spitfire owner and you want to take people flying but make a profit, provided those passengers are fully briefed, fully aware of what they are getting themselves into safety-wise, and provided the aircraft are properly maintained and certificated, you can apply for permission.”

If you have deep pockets, Spitfire flights at Boultbee start at £2,450 for half an hour, but prices have not yet been set for the "Fighter Appreciation course", which will start in 2015.
