Pack 10 contains Stages 32-34

Stage 32 – Contains Brake disc outer, Brake disk inner, Brake caliper inners x2 Brake caliper outers x2 and Brake pads x4

Tools required:
ABS adhesive
Knife
Cutting mat
Ruler
Tweezers
Toothpick

Assembling the Left rear brake.
The rear brakes of the MP4/4 are similar in assembly to those at the front, with two sets of calipers per brake. On the rear brakes, however, the calipers are set at a slightly forward-tilting angle, rather than being perpendicular to the ground like those on the front.
Remove any paint from the area of the discs that adhesive will be applied.
Using a toothpick, apply plastic adhesive to the inner face of the outer brake disc part. Engage the two brake disc parts again, hold them together for 2-3 minutes, and then put to one side until the adhesive has completely dried.

Test-fit the brake calipers with the pads. Then separate them and scrape away the paint from the area on each caliper as you did for the front brake pads in an earlier stage.
Now scrape away the paint from the areas of all four brake pads as shown in the picture below.
Dot a little adhesive into the central recess in the first caliper using a toothpick, then press the brake pad into this and hold the parts together for 2-3 minutes.

Repeat to fit brake pads to all the calipers supplied with this stage.
Scrape away the paint from the areas shown below on both sets of inner and outer brake calipers.
Apply a little adhesive to the areas from which you removed the paint, then press the parts together for 2-3 minutes until the adhesive has cured.
Repeat for the second inner and outer caliper set then leave both to one side to dry for an hour.

Fitting the first hose to the right radiator housing
Lay out the right radiator housing assembled in Stage 21, along with the hose A and wire A from Stage 30, on your work surface.
Cut off a 70mm length of hose A and a 67mm length of wire A. Carefully feed the wire into the hose.
When the wire is fully inserted, use a toothpick to widen one end of the hose a little.

With the tweezers, push the widened end of the hose over the indicated nozzle on the right radiator housing. If the hose slips off the nozzle, add a dot of adhesive to the nozzle to stick the hose in place.
Feed the hose around the side of the housing, bending it alongside the edge.

Fitting the second hose
Cut off more lengths of wire A and hose A, this time cutting the hose to 52mm and the wire to 49mm. Feed the wire into the hose as you did in Step 3, again widening one end of the hose a little once the wire is fully inserted.
Push the widened end of the hose over the indicated nozzle on the radiator housing.
As with the first hose, use a dot of adhesive if the part slips off the nozzle as soon as you have fitted it.
Bend the free end of the hose over so that it lies against the housing, as shown in the picture below.

Fitting the third hose
Cut away more sections of wire A and hose A, this time cutting the hose to 65mm and the wire to 62mm. Feed the wire into the hose, and again widen one end.
Fit the hose onto the nozzle as shown in the picture below.
Bend the hose around the side of the housing, next to the first hose fitted earlier.

Fitting the fourth hose
Once more, use the cutter to cut away lengths of wire A and hose A, this time cutting the hose to 80mm and the wire to 77mm. Prepare the parts as you have done previously.
Fit this length of hose over the indicated nozzle.
Again, bend the hose around to follow the edge of the housing, as shown in the picture below.

Stage complete. Carefully store any unused parts.

Stage 33 – Contains Rear upright middle (L), Rear upright inside (L), Brake duct (L), Axle,
Rear upright outside (L), Axle spacer, Outer CV joint, Axle shaft and assorted screws.

Tools required:
ABS adhesive
Phillips screwdriver (size 0)
Phillips screwdriver (size 00)
Cutter Cutting mat
Masking tape
Ruler
Tweezers
Sheet of paper

The left rear upright

Fitting the axle to the upright outside.
Test-fit the axle and rear upright outside, with the projections on the axle fitting into the notches on the upright outside.
Carefully scrape away the paint from the indicated areas of the axle as shown below.
Dab the indicated areas of the rear upright outside with adhesive,
then fit the parts together as you did for the test fit, and hold them together for 2-3 minutes while the adhesive dries.

Fitting the axle spacer, CV joint and axle shaft
The axle spacer fits over the indicated circular section of the axle. It doesn’t matter which way around you fit it.
Now place the CV joint into the centre of the assembly, marked by the blue circle.
Turn the assembly over, and push the flattened end of the axle shaft into the hole in the centre of the axle.
Make sure the part is firmly in place.
Turn the assembly over again and insert a screw E into the centre, as indicted by the red circle.
Tighten the screw to secure the parts.

Adding the rear upright middle and inside
Test-fit the rear upright middle and outside, to check that you know how to position them when you glue them together.
The slot and projection will fit together when the parts are properly aligned.
Next, test-fit the rear upright inside, making sure that the three circled holes line up.
Scrape away some of the paint from the area of the upright outside and axle assembly, ready for gluing as shown below.
Also remove some of the paint from the inside edge of the rear upright middle
Now scrape away some of the paint from the areas on the surfaces of the middle and inside.
Work carefully around the screw holes to avoid damaging them.

Apply some adhesive to the prepared section of the rear upright outside and fit the rear upright middle onto the part. Hold them together for 2-3 minutes.
Next, apply some adhesive to the indicated sections of the rear upright middle and press the upright inside onto it, as you did in the test fit. Make sure that no adhesive blocks or gets into the screw holes.
Now Insert three screws R into the circled holes and tighten with a screwdriver. Set your assembly to one side for an hour to dry fully before continuing.

Fitting the left rear brake calipers and brake disc
Fetch the left rear brake calipers and brake disc assemblies from Stage 32. Then cut a 1 x 10cm strip from your sheet of paper.
Test-fit the brake disc and rear upright by sliding the disc over the axle shaft so that it rests against the upright. Then use a 4cm strip of masking tape to fix the strip of paper across the rear upright inside, as shown below.

Fold one end of the paper strip across the edge of the brake disc, then test-fit a brake caliper by placing it over the paper and onto the brake disc, as shown. The holes fit over the pins on the rear upright middle. The paper ensures that there is a small gap between the parts, Repeat this process for the other brake caliper to be sure that both fit neatly, then remove them so that you can apply adhesive. Now repeat the process applying adhesive to the holes.
Use two strips of masking tape, each around 6cm in length, to hold both calipers in place, and leave aside for at least an hour for the glue to dry. When the glue is fully dry, remove the masking tape.
Now cut through the strip of paper, taking care not to damage the parts beneath it. Using tweezers, gently pull the paper out from each caliper.

Stage complete. Carefully store any unused parts.

Stage 34 – Contains Gearbox parts sprue, Rear shock absorber parts and springs, Gear linkage and assorted screws.

Tools required:
Phillips screwdriver (size 00)
Cutter
Cutting mat
Ruler
Tweezers Toothpick

The rear shock absorbers.
The suspension of the MP4/4 is based on coil springs and hydraulic shock absorbers, also known as dampers. When a wheel is pushed upwards by a bump in the track, or the chassis pushes down on the wheel during cornering, the spring is compressed, and it expands again when the pressure on it is removed. To stop it compressing or expanding too quickly, its movement is controlled by a piston inside the shock absorber. The shock absorber is filled with hydraulic fluid (oil) to slow the movement of the piston and with it that of the spring. On the MP4/4, the front and rear shock absorbers were mounted inboard, that is, inside the chassis.

TIP: Identifying the shock absorbers: There is a small difference between the left and right rear shock absorbers. To identify them, lay them on your work surface with the thin pins facing to the left, On the left shock, there is a small step between the body and the pin, while on the right shock there is no step at all.

Assembling the shocks and springs
To begin, slide one of the rear shock springs over the left rear shock absorber. It doesn’t matter which spring you use. Place one of the rear shock caps over the spring, as shown (it doesn’t matter which cap you use), then insert a screw L into the hole in its centre and tighten it.
Repeat for the right rear shock absorber, spring and cap. The assemblies should look like those pictured below.

Attaching the hose and brake line T-piece
Fetch the hose A saved from Stage 32. Cut off an 87mm length of hose.
As you have done in previous stages, widen one end of the hose a little with a toothpick.
The next step is to separate the brake line T-piece from the sprue. To avoid damaging it or the other mouldings, carefully remove it by cutting through the join.
Once the part is separated from the sprue, carefully trim it to remove any excess left over from the sprue.
Push the widened end of the 87mm length of hose A over the nozzle of the T-piece.
Now cut a 95mm length of hose A, and again use a toothpick to widen one end a little.
Push this end over the nozzle on the opposite side of the T-piece.
The assembly should now look like that of the picture below.

Stage complete. Carefully store any remaining parts.
