Hi Karl! BigGrin

So you've got yourself a lathe now you'll find it great for making small turnings only 200mm between centre but you can use longer dowels in by fitting through the centre of the chuck upto 10mm so you should be OK!. As you can do your spares in two stages.

Keep your tools sharp use a Diamond File Set or an Oilstone, practice makes perfect so have fun Karl. LOL

Got this lathe a while back, bit noisy & I had to spray the chuck adjuster with wd40 as it gets very tight when reversing jaws...had huge blisters where it rubbed my fingers!!All in all not a bad little tool.I bought these chisels http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws...m&item=180526718628 ..cheap but really sharp..as I found out to my cost when I put one down & then went & leaned on it......ouch!!

It having a 12-volt motor makes it limited on torque power, don't lean on it too hard as it may jam thus damaging your work.

It should be fine and will certainly make light work of turning masts/yardarms etc and a whole host of other goodies.

Frightening where the time goes isn't itLOL I realised the other day that the college my youngest son (& before that my eldest son) goes to I helped move, the removal firm I worked for had the contract to move the college from 7 different sites in the town to it's new purpose built campus,I was the same age as my youngest at the time..a shy retiring 17 year oldBlushing(The older guys soon changed that!!!) ...that was 29 years ago...oh where have all the years gone..Blink Blink Crying

Hi Karl,

I bought the Proxxon Micro Lathe with their boxed set of chisels and found they didn't cut too well.

I'm a newbie woodturner (only metal in past), should I hone them up before use? or it could be lack of technique on my part.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Wilfy

hi wilffy,I bought a cheap set and yes I had to rehone them, but also have ordered a good set.funnily enough they are proxxon. have had a setback with my lathe, the motor drive shaft is spinning up,so the gearwheel that drives the chuck,is motionless,so sending it back.

Hi Karl,

Thanks for reply.

Doesn't sound good, are you going for a replacement or refund?

I was pretty impressed with the Proxxon lathe, very good build quality. Was about £150 from Beesley tools + about £40 for the turning gouges. Worth a look.

Wilfy.

Thanks Karl, just ordered one!!Confused Hope I don't have to send mine back. I'm turning masts and yards for Beagle in the hand drill at the moment just using sandpaper wrapped around. Quite successful.BigGrin Doesn't snatch if you don't hold it to tight!Cool But the lathe will be good for the thinner ones and safer. Don't want to break them.LOL BY THE WAY I DO NOT RECCOMMEND YOU TRY THIS AT HOME. My drill does not have a trigger lock and stops instantly when I let go. I think I shall just use sandpaper in the lathe as well.

I'll post a report on the Amati chisels when it is all delivered.

Never did like whipping, even when they don't have 9 tails!!LOL
