I am using a pliers type plank bending tool to bend my bamboo strips. This is proving to be a bit tricky as too much pressure results in a neatly snipped off piece of bamboo strip. Not enough pressure and there isn't enough bend. practice makes perfect I suppose.

My question is - how much permanent bend needs to be achieved to be used around the bow sections of the hull? Is a degree of springiness (for want of a better word) OK or will this lead to problems later on with strips coming off later in the build?

take out the blade and put it back the other way round, you will notice that on that side it is round and blunt, it works by pushing the plank into the rubber, try it and all will by realized. cheers Willz

Duh!! Should have known that. I tried what you said and it bends a lot more - thank you so much. I guess I am showing my inexperience.

Hi Simon, am pleased to hear you have managed to work out the uses of the bending tool, lots of builders have done exactly the same as you and used the wrong side of the blade....Cool Cool .. It takes a little getting used to but for me, I found it easier to bend the bamboo using steam from a kettle and holding the end of the strip using pliers..... As for your question on springiness, it is best to have as good a fit as you can and the least amount of springiness you have the better you will find everything fits.... I actually prefer to over bend the planks slightly....Cool Cool .. Am sure with practice and the trying out of various techniques you will eventually find the technique that suits you best.....Cool Cool .. Good luck with the build, hope to see some of your work as you progress.... Should you need any other assistance then just ask and someone will be there help.... Hope this helps...

Regards

Alan

Thanks Alan - the build is going well but has slowed down a little of late because of delays getting tools sent out from UK. I am still experimenting with plank bending and want to get it right before wading into the first set of bamboo planking. Up to issue 17 with 20/21/22/23 about to be delivered - so lots to do!
