Screaming out for a bit of advice here concerning planking? I thought that I would start my planking of the hull today and following the instructions, issue 21, page 10, panel 2, states: place plank against hull between frames 24 and 17. Line up flush with bottom of lower gun deck...this I did and noticed that there was a 2mm to 3mm drop in the centre of the plank to line it up with the lower gun deck...Question?? Do I have to follow the curve of the gun deck and bend the plank in order to fit the first plank...Okay, dumb question...but I am seeking assurance before I commit, as all the following planks will have to be curved too...the plank in picture 2 looks almost straight to me...I know...thick as a plank sort of question...but.... Hello Mate, Yep! follow the line of the gun deck. The gentle curve goes all the way with the first six layers of planking......Also see Tomicks build. I have just finnished mine and can now see the lines of the ship. I must say she looks beautiful. I wish I could post you some pics but the will not load on here. As long as you follow what Tomick is doing you shouldn't go wrong, he has the added advantage of being a couple of issues in front of us, so he knows whats next etc. happy planking mate! Ship Builds on the go

Okay...following the first plank, and yes lads, I finally got to fit the first plank between 17 and 24 on both sides...SHhhhh.....hoping they are still there later...  No, it was fitting the second plank towards the stern and the lowest of the gallery planks, they do not exactly line up with each other  ??? Apart from being a pain in the ass, should I worry about this...or are there others facing the same...problem...I rest my case me-lud...me thinks I'll ask the jury.....Well!!! Without seeing a picture I was aware of this today on my build, I was lucky. BUT saying that Jonny I dont think it will too much of an issue as there is so much in both the Bow and Stern to cover up any little minor problems, that said if you can bung a picture up, even if its a mobile camera picture, at least we can settle your mind a little.

Hi Colin, sorry for the delay in answering but uploading pictures through photobucket is not exactly quick..  I have this picture where I offered the offending plank towards the lower transom plank to show the difference, as you can see, it is around 2 to 3mm out??...I look forward to your very valuable input... Hi Jonny I'll try and explain, have you glued that plank down? Yes? unglue it and start that one again No? then you can begin..  See my batton plank, the last plank will sit on top of that, which means with your plank all you need to do is slope it upwards towards the galley planks/support, and by the looks of it your plank is a little high, yes that would make it worse but by sloping that plank upwards, even it it aint all the way it no massive problem. Are you missing one plank after doing the galley planking? If you had that last one then it wouldn't show so much?  Compare to Tomicks.

Jonny, the plank is too short in its stern overlap, and it could be the angle of the photo, but it appear's to have a few mm shortfall in the gallery planking where the planking runs up to the frames.

in tomicks build he has 8 planks on the gallery support and so do i..correct me if i am wrong but do you have seven this could be the problem..thanks paul cheers benny

Step 5 on page 13 of issue 20 shows 8 rows, step 2 notes that you should chamfer the planks for a good fit.
Any gap between the last plank and frame 34 should be no more than the thickness of a plank.

Thanks Tomick, I see where the problem lies now, my build having only 7 planks, I will have to make a few adjustments and relay the gallery planking, then look at it again, the aft hull plank in my picture was not glued but just offered into place to show how out of line it would have been,,, thanks very much for your time and input mate... I wouldn't say Pros, although they would do most anything for money to go to the pub lol, I didn't get any work done this weekend, got roped into playing HALO with the kids, and boy am I feeling old today, they hammered me As for the planking issue, as long as your bulkheads/ribs are sitting correctly on the false keel, and are all level with the first deck you put on, when you follow this deck line with your first plank, keeping the the deck level with the bottom of the plank, you should be ok. Well, I noticed that rib 34 was not quite sanded back to the false keel..i.e it was around 1.5mm proud of it, I sanded it back to rib 34 then totally re-planked the gallery, and hey presto, I managed to fit 8 planks onto the gallery section, though the final plank was slightly overhanging the rear parts 32..(Oh well, nobody's perfect)...surprising what problems a few millimetres of wood can cause  Current Builds: Deagostini HMS Victory: Deagostini HMS Sovereign of the seas.
