History
The Jupiter was a wood fired 4-4-0 steam locomotive built in New York in 1868 for the Central Pacific railroad company. This locomotive gained fame for being one of the two locomotives to take part in the Golden Spike ceremony on May 10th 1869. This ceremony which took place in Utah represented the completion of the transcontinental railroad. The central pacific and Union pacific railroads had both been laying track. The central pacific started in the west and Union pacific started in the east). The 2 companies ended up meeting in Utah and the Golden spike ceremony was the symbolic event that signaled the completion of the first railroad to stretch from eastern USA all the way to California.

By the sounds of it this kit has pretty much most of the different types of build material about and sounds like it will be a challenging one to build. Judging by the picture though all that effort will be pay off with a beautiful looking model upon completion. I wish you luck with your build and look forward to following This isn't a subject matter I know much about but I do recognise it from back to the future

Yes the quality is superb. The parts all fit together perfectly so far. The biggest challenge is gluing all of the different materials together. More about that as the diary progresses. Carl

I may try that Jase especially after managing to stick myself to the kit more than once with superglue.

So let the construction begin. The first part of the build is the frame for the locomotive. This is a combination of plastic, wood and metal pieces. The first job is to make 2 blocks that contain a bolt which is used to fasten the wheel truck to. I used 5 minute epoxy to glue everything together. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Now we move on to the main frame parts which consist of 2 thicker metal pieces, some plastic parts to join the frame and a couple of pieces of metal that are screwed to the metal frame. There is also parts for the bottom of the firebox which is made of wood with thin metal coverings. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

The frame is now finished and ready for priming. But wait. The screws used to join the 2 frames were Philips head and my OCD brain will always look at those when it is finished and it will ruin the model for me.After all you would need a huge screwdriver to use a screw on the real train. So I filled the screw heads with automotive filler and sanded them down.here is the result darbyvet attached the following image(s):

More history
the original Jupiter train was scrapped in 1909.In 1974 the national park service commissioned an engineering company to build a replica. The original plans were lost so the company had to make new plans based on the surviving photographs. The construction was documented in a video.
In the original train the frame was bolted together, but over time the bolts would loosen so for the replica they heated parts of the frame and shrunk fit them together.
