Hi All
First let me say im new and love watching those builds comming on i am greatley impressed with the level of craftmanship thats on this formum.
So my problem. After reading some of the coments on other builds regarding the planking of the hull, i tested an old peice i had on the hull and found a huge gap between the plank and part 11.
What would be the best thing to do to cure this.
Many thanks before hand
Foz

I there Foz and welcome aboard mate...can I suggest that you pack the space out with balsa wood, then fairing it back in shape with the rest of your frames giving more area for your planks to adhere to, that is what I have done...

also foz,Isee you hav'nt done any chamfering yet,you do need to do this so you get no gaps when you put the planking on,there are many builds on here that show how it's done, zeptraders build log is very good,to see how it's done, good luck and take your time.

I have started to chamfer but the gap is there and the plank will not curve properly. Should I pack the rib out with some spare pieces?

z8000783...have you tried soaking your plank in hot water for around twenty minutes to make it more tensile? You can pack your bow out like mine if it helps...

Sorry for being unclear. The plank has been soaked and curved ok. Hovever to make it meet rib 11 will cause a dent.

I have not packed the gaps because I don't have access to balsa here (although I will be back in the UK next week). So the question is should I widen rib 11 with spare planking. Your looks fatter than mine.

John...If there is a dip in the planking where it is supposed to come into contact with the rib try using some spare thin planking to raise the area of rib then fair it down, then re-try your planking across it...Similar to this build up of frames in this picture...hope this helps??

Thanks John

I didn't realise I would have to add so many extra bits to the ribs which I am OK doing now except that I am running out of spare lengths (mainly from the launch). Reading the forums here it seems to be common practice but I still wonder what the point of laser cut parts is all about. God only knows what they might have been like if they weren't laser cut.

I know what yer mean mate, I have stacks of wood and planking left over from previous builds...as for laser cutting, there have been a few crossed words about that on this forum so far?

Thanks for the advice, im now going to ask a bit more. I have done the gally planking at the rear and it says to trim it down, but im not sure how far to trim it down to as all it says in the mags is use a plank. Can some one be a bit more clear on this.

Hi,
I Trimmed the plank ends to match parts 7, you may need to angle them a little to allow the next layers of planking to lie flat and follow the line of the hull, but wait until you are fitting the planks as the fairing is very minimal.
Hope this helps

Just an observation but the final stern frame needs to be sanded so it is flush with the false keel.

But you have left a bevel at the top. It needs to be flush for it's whole height.

The last stern frame is clearly not flush with the false keel, and certainly should not have an angled bevel which meets with the gallery planking.
