I've had this kit since 2009 and I have finally decided to started it while I'm waiting for my next instalment of my Sovereign of the seas. Box:Picture 1 Instructions and plans:The box contains a instruction booklet containing rather vague instructions, so I will have to work out alot of the details myself. The instructions provided can be downloaded from the following address - http://www.billingboats....tterdam_Instruction.pdf

Contents:I rechecked the contents of the box to familiarise myself with the parts and then sorted the mixed wood lengths and labelled them. File Attachment(s): michael.rolph attached the following image(s):

Getting started:Before I started the build I reviewed my work area and decided it needed some organisation Picture 1 After a quick trip to IKEA I was able to remove most the clutter from my workspace. Picture 2-4 I removed my Sovereign from its jig and stripped out the brackets and removed the end stop. Next I drew the outlines of the bow and stern on a piece of plyboard and cut them out with a Dremel. Picture 5-6 When I was removing the keel pieces from the sheets I discovered a problem with one of the sheets. There was partial delamination of the top most layer on some of the parts. I inspected each piece and stuck the loose layers down with PVA glue and placed them under pressure between two sheets of MDF and weighed down with several text books. Keel:The bow and stern were connected using two lengths of wood and kept under pressure to avoid warping, once dry two extra pieces were added to the sides and held in place with clamps. Once dry the keel was fitted into the jig and fixing blocks used to keep it in line. Picture 1 Some of the bulkheads are lower than the guide jig so I had to use a offcut of MDF to lower the jig. Michael Very nice start to your build. Alwas thought this was a plstic moulded hull so very interested to see its not. That drawer unit looks nice and sturdy. Never been to an ikea store although i believe we now have one in Swindon. Hope the rest of your build goes well. Happy Modelling

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. I had the day off work on Monday so I managed to make some progress Frames:I started adding the remaining frame to keel, the middle block of frames are separated by 77 mm spacers Picture 1 The deck support beams were added once the frames were dry Picture 2 The front most frame required trimming so it sat correctly on the keel Picture 3 File Attachment(s): michael.rolph attached the following image(s):

Rear deck:The rear deck was painted using Humbrol no. 23 (duck egg blue) and attached it to the frame using soup tins to apply pressure Picture 1 Picture 2 After a few minutes I realised that I had missed a piece out from the rear of the ship, I removed the deck added the missing piece and reattached the deck. Rear cabin entrance:The first step was to sort the bags of fitting in order to find two portholes require for the doors. The fittings were separated into ziploc bags and labelled so I can find the correct components easily Picture 1 I removed the require sections and cleaned up the charing from the edges Picture 2 Once assembled it was painted with Humbrol no. 24 (Tan) and attached to the frame Picture 3-4 File Attachment(s): michael.rolph attached the following image(s):

Bah, I hate Photobucket. I spent about an hour cropping and resizing my images dealing with multiple crashes then once I posted to the forum I find out the cropping on half the photos has reverted. I'm now using Paint.NET to crop and resize the images before I upload them to Photobucket.

A small bit of progress made today. Deck structures: The deck components required some of the stock to be rounded, the stock was clamped to a mdf board to and rounded with a emery board. Picture 1 The pieces were identified, removed and cleaned up. Picture 2 The hatch and storage bins needs a bit of cleanup work with some wood filler before painting Picture 3-4 michael.rolph attached the following image(s):

Just a small update. Second DeckAfter test fitting the next deck I discovered a problem with the alignment of the cabin doors. The edge of the cabin overlapped the stair hole of the above deck. This was caused by the incorrect assembly of the cabin components, the front components should have been attached to the wall at the back rather than the side. Picture 1-2 The misalignment meant that the ladder would not fit in the gap, rather than try and remove the cabin components I decided that I would trim the ladder to fit. Picture 3-4 CabinI identified and removed all the components of the cabins on the next level, the sides have been re-enfored so that the edge can be rounded over. Picture 5-6 I plan to attach OHP transparencies to the rear of the cabin to simulate window. File Attachment(s): michael.rolph attached the following image(s):
