Andy,

I was stupid enough to leave my model ship next to our hamster cage so when my son cleaned out her cage he accidently displaced the mast that I built following your build diary, and it is now in pieces Cursing . I can recover but I dread rebuilding it, I remember how hard it was for me to do. I am curious do you know of any craftsman that I could pay to build it for me, I would supply the specifications and materials. I know this is not a request you would normally see but I am so close to finishing that I do not want to go back and re-build. Of course I will if that is my only option.

Once again thank you for all your help and support.

Best Regards,

Dan

Hi Dan

Sorry to hear of your misshap but I am sure all is not lost. Unfortunately I do not know of anyone who can help you here and I am very busy right now. As for rebuilding the mast yourself I think the second time around it will be far easyer and quicker to do as your now know how to do it . Wishing you all the best.

Regards

Andy

Andy,

I did not think you would know of anyone, but I had to ask. Yes it will be a bit easier, but there is one area where I had real issues with and finally gave up on. Its the part where you clean up by using a metal strip around the bottom 3 legs. I think my original problem is that I used a strip that was too thick and not malleable enough. I have tried to correct this by using some of the metal that held the etchings. This is easier to manipulate by I am still running into issues trying to connect it to the base. Either I do not have the right tools or the glue is not strong enough (I use gorilla glue). How thin was the metal you used?

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan

I think I used .005 Brass Sheet by KS Metals available at most good model shops, The glue I used was medium superglue. Another alternative would be to use the foil from a metal tooth paste tube I know most tooth past now comes in plastic tubes but some tubes like this are still made of soft metal and will be easyer to manipulate than the brass and once painted who will know, just make sure its clean before you use it . Hope this helps.

Regards

Andy

Andy,

Thank you again for your comments and suggestions. Your suggestion triggered a thought that I could use Foil Wrap folded to add strength and put part of the brass strip in the back so that it would support the light. It turned out pretty well, not as good as yours, but acceptable for someone of my skill level. I have attached pictures, any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks Andy,

Last time I built this I had a very difficult time getting the brass tube to bend to the angle for the two mast towers. What tools or techniques did you use to bend them to the same angle? Out of curiosity do you remember what angle you bent the two mast two. My estimation was that they were bent to 130 degrees. It is not really important just curious as I said. Thanks for your help.

Dan
