Hi all I am planing to start building the Norfolk Wherry Albion in a week or so as soon as I get the bits together So I can get her right I went to see her yesterday at the Beccles river pageant and took loads of pics . A bit of history about the Albion she was built in1897 and completed in 1898 on the north bank of Lake Lothing between Ouiton broad and Lowestoft . She was built for Bungay maltsters WD and AE Walker . The Albion is the only carvel built wherry all the rest where clinker built. Her construction is mainly oak but she has a 42 foot mast of pitch pine with a 1 ton counter balance so she can pass under the many broadland bridges . The Albion has a gaff rig sail of 1200sq feet and she is 65 feet long with rudder and a tonnage 22.78 tons and could carry 41 tons of goods ie coal reeds barley wood and sugar beet . She sailed with crew of 2 a skipper and boy Hope you like the pics rgd Martyn File Attachment(s): Martyn Ingram attached the following image(s): Building ? Completed. Soliei Royal . Hi Martyn, That will be an interesting project to follow. Not as familiar with this type of craft as I am with the Thames sailing barges that used to frequent the larger rivers and coastline of East Anglia, but I have seen one or two wherries in my visits to the broads. They certainly make a majestic sight in full sail. It's lovely to see them, and I look forward to watching this one come together. Is this a kit build or a scratch build Martyn? Happy building David

Hi David Its built just from plans so I think is a scratch build if it go's to plan I will hopefully change it to R/C The Wherry is very similar to the Thames barge but has a smaller draft when fully loaded so not as good in the sea as the Thames Thanks for looking rgd Martyn Building ? Thank you all for the nice comments The plans came yesterday and oh wow what have I let my self in for The Ship is shown in side view only and its 13.5 ins long not 27 ins so I will have to re size them Top plan shows the ribs and the placement but very little else So I am thinking of building it 13.5 ins long and see how it go's before I make the big one just to see where the problems lie Comments very welcome Rgd Martyn Building ? Hi all A bit more work on the Albion I have cut out all the ribs and keel As you can see I have dry fitted the ribs to the keel 4 of the ribs have been cut out for the inner deck so I can show the goods inside a bit of a diversion from the plans When finished I am hoping to give it to the Wherry Trust if it comes out ok fingers crossed Thanks for looking rgd Martyn Martyn Ingram attached the following image(s): Building ?
