Hey folks. Been a little busy with other things lately, so haven't been keeping this updated as much as I should. But, I have been able to make a little progress in my downtime. BigGrin

A little more progress on the launch, continuing with the weathered theme. Small progress I know, heh.

On the SotS itself, I installed the supports for the second deck. Since it wasn't going to be visible in the end, I went ahead and added some reinforcement here, just in case. Maybe not necessary, but I had scrap wood, so... :P

Then glued in the second deck.

After faring, which I forgot to take any pictures of, made my first dive into planking. While it had some moments of pure pain-in-the-you-know-what, I'm finding it kind of enjoyable. I bought some planking screws, which I think have been quite helpful. Certainly easier than pre-drilling nail holes in the bamboo. At least, for me it seems easier. I've certainly got a LOT to learn about planking. I'm glad that this ship has a double hull. Getting it right on a single hull will take me a lot more practice. Laugh

Anyway, that's it for now. I'm continuing on the planking today but I expect it will be a while yet before that wraps up. Also expecting my Month 3 package any day now. BigGrin BigGrin

Thanks for looking. BigGrin BigGrin

Thanks, as always, for the kind words. BigGrin BigGrin

I do have a question about tapering strakes. I seem to only get pretty close. I'm wondering if it's the way I'm doing it. I have been trying to get the taper pretty much correct before bending the wood. It seems easier to shape them while they are still straight. Is this how you folks do it, or do you bend them first? Combination of both? I just feel like I'm not getting a really straight edge where the tapered strakes end, in particular, those at the keel at the bow end.

Any thoughts appreciated. Cool

Hi Tim, tapering the planks is just one of the little arts that you master as you progress.. And yes, it is a combination of both but I find the method that works for me is by marking the line of the taper on the plank, do most of the taper while it is straight to just above the marked line. Bend the plank then finish the taper off to fit. I also created a very basic tutorial on how I tapered planks for the Sots, you may find it useful.... Hope this helps.. Cool Cool
