Thanks for stopping by guys. I am hoping I can do a half decent job of it, I'm not planning to go too heavy on the weathering as I have noticed a lot of modern battle tanks are pretty well maintained. I have however invested in a few MIG Weathering magazines to learn about different techniques

Thanks all for your comments Dan, I am hoping the etch doesnt get the better of me, I did find when I did my Yamato most of the time I suprisingly really enjoyed working with etch Half of stage 1 now complete, I am surprised by the amount of detail on the bottom of the hull that will never get seen, it even has some convincing molded weld lines

RogerThornhill wrote:Looks like an interesting build Thanks for stopping by Roger, If I dont mess it up it should build into a pretty cool model I have done the first bit of photo etch, just some small round bits that go on what I believe is part of the Explosive Reactive armour. 15 on each side. Other small parts added to the hull as well with the suspension being added in the next step. I decided to try out my new primer I got, Badgers 'Stynylrez' grey primer. The bottle advises that it is best used through a 0.5mm needle at between 20-30 psi, the largest I have is 0.4mm so that will have to do. It also says it is self levelling. I found while spraying that the needle needed to be cleaned a few times, I'm not sure if it is because I was using a smaller needle or not. I am not sure what the method is for thinning it yet so will have to google that, perhaps I will try some drying retarder next. I found that it does lay down a very nice layer of primer that is touch dry very quickly much like Vallejo's primer. The detail is still very visible and when the needle is not needing a clean it does spray very nicely. All the wheels shown have been primed with the Stynlrez (I have no idea how this is supposed to be pronounced 'Stinel-rez'?)

Nice work Dave, bet those little round bits of etch drove you nuts by the time you had done them all?! Love the level of detail moulded into those sprockets and road wheels too, very impressive for a 1:35 scale model, I may have to look at one or two Trumpeter kits myself after seeing this!!
Looking forward to your next update already - well done.

Kev Thanks Kev, I really didnt mind doing those round bits, then again they were much bigger than the 100's that I had to apply to the portholes on the Yamato

No construction today just some spraying as thats all I felt like after a long day at work. I decided to go with Mr Hobby acrylics for this build as thats what is referenced on the colour call outs. After a bit of research I found that they can be thinned with Tamiya X20A I am very impressed with the Mr Hobby paints, I thinned them like I thin Tamiya's paints using a simple 50/50 ratio, they sprayed beautifully with hardly any needle build up at all. Not a bad result on the wheels if I do say so myself, although I do have to admit that I used a Quick wheels template which really did make this effortless The lasts picture you can see the detail on the tyres, it even has what looks like it might be the tyre size stamped in it. The first picture is with a flash so washes out the colour a bit

Thanks Steve, Im really enjoying this kit. I do have memories of watching my dad building a tank kit when I was little I have now finished stages 1 and 2 in the manual which leaves the suspension finished, sadly it is not a fully working suspension, not even partially working, infact it doesnt move at all, not through a mistake but by design I should add There is also a plow/shovel type thing on the front that does move, although I am thinking that I will have it in the stowed position for the build but leave it movable now to assist with painting. I have also matt coated the wheels for now just to protect them from any handling. With regards to the primer I mentioned previously, the instructions on the bottle suggest a 0.5mm needle for best results. unfortunately the biggest I have for my H&S Ultra (now my primer airbrush) is 0.4mm and couldnt find a bigger one but I did find a 0.6mm for my H&S Evolution CRplus so will try that with the primer to see if I get any better results without the needle clogging
