Curiosity really as to why you would do it. I know we won't be for the Victory so it's an arbitrary questions in some ways but...
Some, especially the experts here, have mentioned that even if you are double planking, it is still important to get the first layer correct. It seems that you should not being doing it to cover up your mistakes as that won't work, which makes a lot of sense to me.
So the question is, if you aim to do the first layer well, which looking at some of the build diaries here, has certainly been achieved, why then put on another layer?

I would imagine John it's a matter of preference really. The majority of modellers usually have the second layer of planking included in the package so are used to building in this particular way. The planks supplied are usually 1mm thick for both layers of planking. With this build the planks are 2mm with plenty of room for sanding etc. Maybe I'm wrong but I think this model is designed for one layer of planking and to add a further layer may look a bit odd by kicking out the further additions to the superstructure later in the build. Dunno what others think, but to add additional planking and get dimensions correct a lot of sanding would have to be done to the first layer, at least 1mm off just to add another layer of 1mm at additional cost. I look at the forum daily and I can confidently say that for most this is not just a hobby, maybe it started that way but now has turned into a labour of love for them, and why not? All the builders want their model to be the best and are doing their utmost to make it so. I will only be doing one layer but I am making alterations elsewhere like adding additions to the deck cannon:- I am not a professional builder by any means but others are and I am grateful for their contributions to the forum. We all share one common goal.... to build 'The Victory. Good luck to you in all your decisions on the build and I sincerely hope you are satisfied with completed project. Paul.

My opinion, (and I could be wrong) is that many kits are double planked for 2 reasons. One, it seems like a good selling point. Double planking has got the be better than single planking ? Secondly, it's cheaper to supply a thickish base layer from lime/basswood and a thin decorative layer from walnut or some other expensive hardwood, than it is to supply thick planks of walnut (or similar).
Some say it's easier to apply the second layer as you've got a solid shell to work on. Personally, I find it easier to work with a thicker plank than a thin one. That may just be me !
I'd just add that this is my opinion based on kits in general, not the Victory.

Some interesting ideas going around here. As already said, I think it is entirely down to personal preference.
For me, I will be veneering for a few reasons: I used the dressmaking pin method to apply the planks and so have a few small dents and dings across the planking, which a veneer will cover. Secondly, there is quite a bit of variation in the planking, whereas the Lime veneer I have is all consistently one shade. This might just be my model etc. The lower half of the hull will also be in basswood, so I will be veneering rather than staining this, so naturally I feel a top veneer must be applied to even the hull out. Also, a veneer will, in my opinion, give me more play with the gun port framing later, and finally, it means when all of the rough and messy work of the build is done, such as sanding and cutting etc, I can fit a nice new veneer onto my ever grubbier looking hull!
Just my thoughts!
Cheers, Tom
