Hi all. I have a total newbie question. Will a clear coat (either semi gloss or flat) prevent my glue from eating away at my paints. I have been using all Tamiya acrylics for my hold, but, as careful as I was, I still noticed some spots where my paint has been damaged.

BigGrin It should stop it yes but I think the question you should be asking is why hasnt the glue set properly as this is the root of your problemCool

Hello Jedi,

Your question seems a little vague but Andy is right to ask why the glue hasn't set properly and it would indeed eat away at the paint if you were applying paint over glue that hadn't dried first or do you in fact mean that you have painted the parts first, then glued them together and the glue has subsequently attacked the already dried paint? In which case it would depend what glue you are using as to whether you need to clear coat the parts before gluing though given that this model is plastic it would likely need quite an aggressive or 'hot' type of glue which will almost certainly attack any paintwork close to the bond whether by direct contact or by the aggressive nature of the fumes? What type of glue are you using and was the damage like a coat of 'white frosting' near the glue joint?

Hi wildunc1

Cyanoacrylate instant glue, also known as superglue is mostly used on this build but as long as you follow the recommendations in the magazines provided then you shouldn't have any problems.

I'm using a MEK glue or plasticweld for sticking plastic to plastic, on,y to be used on unpainted surfaces though

Aren't the parts of the falcon mostly ABS? One could probably weld them with pure acetone if so.

You are using the wrong glue. This model is mostly ABS and needs to be glued with cyanoacrylate glue aka super glue.

Don't use too much either. If you gob it on the parts the excess glue will start to degrade the plastic and make it soft and nothing will stick to it and will make the surface have an undesirable orange peel effect.

Ron
