Thought I would share the method I used to create half furled sails. I'm not saying this is historically correct but is just a look that I came up with that I like. Step 1 attach lines to the sails at red and blue arrows then tie these to the yards at the corresponding dots pulling the lines tight. Step 2 Take the bottom corners of the sail ( green arrows )and fold them down and under. Step 3 turn the whole thing over and put a temporary stitch joining bottom corners to back of sail just below the block for the sheet line (green dot) this can be replaced with the sheet line later.
Turning over again should now look like pics 4 and 5. At this stage the sail still look a bit stiff and unnatural so now we need the magic ingredient plain old H2O. Dunk it in the water for a few seconds and give it a squeeze then you can play around with tweezers putting in some creases and wrinkles to give the sail a sense of weight, now with the ends of the yards resting on something so the sail is left hanging let it dry naturally. Should end up with something like pic 6 and that's it, pretty easy really and the best thing is there is no cutting of the sail material so if you don't like it you can just start again no harm done.
