Looking at the members build projects, a lot of the planking looks very smooth? Are you all filling and sanding as you go along or is the camera angle that makes them look so smooth?

Hi Tiswas, for me just careful planking and no filling.

I do think the camera angles on some shot (mine) do look smooth, BUT I will be snading once planking is done, I'm not after perfection..yet, I think a very small amount of difference in the planks does make it look good.

hi tis..not sure if you looked at mine but i planked then gave it a good sanding and filled if needed i then gave it a coat of paint to show if more filling was needed, with my build i am second planking with 0.5x5mm walnut planks so all i am after with the first planking is a good base..cheers paul

Though I haven't even started planking yet (yes, I'm a bit far behind at present), I'll be filling and sanding as I go along. My Victory will be fully painted at the end though.

I'm following you with second planking. I haven't made my mind up about 0.5 x 5mm or 0.5 x 4mm, your views would be appreciated.
Seconding I wondered whether oak planking would be better as walnut is very dark.
Since my arm is out of action I've got time but I thought I'd just ask.

Hi Artful

Walnut is alright really, I'm using on my Surprise build and find it fairly light. My mahogany ship is darker..

the original planking is 2x5mm so 0.5x5mm veneer would make sense cause i am not filling the second planking i want to see the lines of the planks through the paint..cheers paul

Hi Tis, I was thinking along the same lines as you mate, I am not overly too pleased with my planking, a number of my planks are just a fraction proud of some of the other planks, at first I thought that the strakes might have been a tad thicker than the rest, and the thought of ripping off all the planks and starting again had crossed my mind a few times, but I shall sand and use multi-purpose wood filler to right any unevenness as my finished Victory will be painted...good luck on your build mate...
