She was launched on the Tyne and yesterday Ark Royal sailed back into the Tyne for the last time.
Tyneside will be the last non-naval port the Swan Hunter-built Royal Navy flagship visits before returning to Portsmouth, where she will be decommissioned.
Hundreds of South Tynesiders lined the banks of the Tyne to welcome the aircraft carrier home, and thousands are expected to board her during her farewell visit.
The Invincible class carrier berthed at Northumbria Quay, North Shields, for a five-day visit.
HMS Ark Royal was launched at Swan Hunter in 1981 by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
The vessel will be open to the public tomorrow (21st November) between 10am and 3.30pm, she is due to leave the river for the final time on Tuesday about 3pm.

Such sad news!
I have recently been reading some books about Elizabethan England and the days of the Armada. It was Elizabeth 1st who named the first Ark Royal. We can only pray that another Royal Navy ship will be built and given such an important name.

It was the wrong decision and was brought about due to governmental mismanagement but I don't want to get into the politics. Wouldn't it be great to make a model of the great carrier. Any thoughts. Our new carriers wont have any aircraft on them but they will be magnificent vessels and when we are invaded the RAF Red Arrows can give an air display as we sign the surrender document.
