Hi Folks

What is the best wood filler to use for filling the pin holes gaps in planking etc on my Victory build. Can I just use any or is there a special kind for wooden ships?.

Thank in advance

Terry

Hi Terry.
I use standard wood filler. Nothing special just own brand.
Chris.

Hi there Terry.

As Magpie says, any brand of wood filler will do. Just one question, are these the pin holes on the first layer of planking? If the planks are going to be covered with a second thin layer of veneer there's no point wasting filler on them. Just a good sanding to remove any burrs on the surface and the second layer will cover any pin holes.
Best of luck!

BigGrin Hi Terry

Any wood filler from a DIY store can be used for this Ronseals wood filler is a good one but be careful of the cheaper variety's as they can be a bit on the sandy/lumpy side and not good for models.

Firstly large gaps [ Im not saying you have any ] on a double/single planked hull should be filled with custom fitted wedges to fill the larger gaps this will give a good surface for the second planking or a good surface for the paint after filling and sanding. If it is a single planked hull the utmost care should be taken to minimise gaps and therefore less filler is needed although most single planked ships are painted so the paint will hide most of the major slip ups and with practice the art of planking can be mastered. Every ship you build will be better than the last as your technique improves.

Another way to fill gaps pin holes is to spray the finished planking with warm water around the pin holes and leave over night the water will swell the wood and shrink the holes. Next do a rough sanding of the hull but save all the saw dust you can and mix this with PVA glue and use that as a filler for the gaps between the planks. You can also squirt some super glue into a gap when your sanding and if your fast the sawdust will also fill the gap.

Andy
