Hello Shipbuilders My name is Page, age 73, retired due to Heart Attach in 2012 and took up shipbuilding again after many years of doing other things. I came across this web and forum and while I never dreamed I would embark on a project such as this after reading the forum and details on web, I decided "this is the way to go" especially on a large detailed ship. For the past three years I have tinkered with Model Expos Phantom-Chesapeake Bay Skip Jack and Pride of Baltimore. While not show pieces by any means I learned a lot-accumulated way too many tools and equipment and now feel I need to build a ship I can display in my Den and leave to my Grandchildren. I like the format of getting the kit in stages rather than all at once and having a forum of current and previous builders. This way you can move at your own pace-not continuing to look and build ahead and then losing parts or not understanding how it all fits together as you progress-getting frustrated-losing your will to enjoy your hobby and smell the roses! I have never did a build diary but plan on doing it with my Surprise. Not too computer savy but hope to add photos as I move along. My first section should be arriving right after Turkey Day. Page

Thanks for everyone's welcome. I got my first kit Wed Dec 2nd. Read the step by step - laid out the cutouts and tried to identify the parts but found that they were not numbered! Laying out keel was no problem but id'ing the frames is a problem. Are they supposed to be numbered? Is there a paper cutout sheet id'ing the wood cutouts? I plan on calling Model Space Sat AM but will probably not get them until Monday. Page

Hiya Page . Sorry to hear of your problem. I have PM'd you a link to the HMS Surprise cutout list in my dropbox. This should help you with your problem. If not feel free to ask again. Thanks Chris On the bench 1/350 Revell Tirpitz Platinum Edition (Pontos PE and Wooden deck) plus extra Eduard PE set and extra MK1 door sets.

Thanks for everyonees welcome and offer of help. I called Model Space Monday the 7th and told them of my problem of no parts numbered and they said they would send me a new kit today. Great service! Does anyone recommend a good model wood glue. I have used Well Bond and really like it but ran out and cannot find it locally so using Titebond. Going to go to the Web to find my well Bond. Page

Hi Page, Titebond will work very well. I've used it myself on many occasions without any problems coming to light... . Regards Alan

Thanks everyone. Can someone give me the dimensions for the jig one should use foe the keel and frames, i.e. the width one sets the L angles, which I assume is the width of the keel(6mm) for a snug fit.Should I square and glue frame 5 before installing the winding frames which are to be glued or are the frames glued to frame 5 before installing on keel and not gluing it to the keel. On Frame 25 they want you to fit and glue the 8 central stern collars(26) then glue the stern knightheads (28) to both sides of the keel. Again should the collars be glues to 25 before installing 25 to the keel and not gluing it? But I think this all glued at once since you are gluing the stern knightheads and collars. Sorry to be a pain but I know this step is crucial Page

Sorry to be a pain but I know this step is crucial Page Hi Page. I used a sheet of chipboard 22cm x 70cm long. The L brackets are set anywhere it doesnt interfer with a rib. The width is the thickness of the keel. Glue the winding frames to frame 5 once dry then fit to the keel. With frame 25 you glue it in place then install the collars then the knightheads. Hope this helps. Chris On the bench 1/350 Revell Tirpitz Platinum Edition (Pontos PE and Wooden deck) plus extra Eduard PE set and extra MK1 door sets.
