A couple of points here I think it was Colin (Zeptrader) who has posted pictures of his dremel in a vertical drilling stand with a sander attachment in the chuck fitting into a hole in a wooden board. This looked like an effective sanding device for our scale of modelling. The other point is that I have found hand sanding so much easier using a set of Perma Grit tools which were recommended by Tomick. Although I am a mug for buying power tools, I don't see the need to go for the types shown in the above links. Just my view, of course!! Mike T

Each to their own Mike, mini power tools are there to assist though are not essential items, and is the same reason why one might buy a mini lathe.

Point taken, I did say I was just offering my view, based on a small fraction of your knowledge and experience! Mike T

I certainly like the idea along with mike about power tolls, sucker for 'em. But as Ive been working this week on the hull (planking) and now cutting the middle gun ports I feel power tool could lead to over sanding, a small amount of low grit and feeling the area your sanding is so much better..only my opinion. And considering how soft this wood is its takes a little over sanding. Then again it is christmas soon, maybe a new tool could leap outta santas sack.

Quite true, over zealous use can create all sorts of problems that take a lot of effort to put right, and one thing sanders do create is lots of dust that you really don't want to be inhaling!
Talking about Santa's sack, anyone got an interesting wish list model wise?

Hi, I've got the Endeavor here, its a really nice kit & am looking forward to starting it. I also recently recently purchased the Proxxon Delta Sander, great little tool. Bought the saw blades which are designed for cutting out windows, hatch ways & gun ports haven't tried them as yet so can't really comment on their effectiveness. My 'surprise' xmas present arrived yesterday, opened box to check it before giving to kids to wrap up & am I glad I did! Keel was not in the usual plywood fret & broken, 2 of the walnut frets were snapped & the plans were missing! Wilfy

I showed my wife these posts in the hope of getting a sander. Response: M & S pants or handkerchiefs or a surprise. I'd love a surprise, thinking HMS Surprise Response:You can cook Christmas lunch... Well I tried. ArtfulBodger Previous Build: HMS. Bounty

Hi Paul,
The Caldercraft kit, bought it about 3 mths ago & longing to start it, but still battling with my Corel Geryhound & fitting in the Victory.

I prefer hand sanding and have been advised to buy perma grit sanding blocks.
Any advice would be gratefully accepted, so any recommendations on which one's to buy?

Just got the Dremel 8000 as an early xmas present. Its cordless and adjustable speed and comes with plenty of attachments. Not cheap but made short work of the stern area of the ship. I had spent 3hrs hand sanding half of the stern and less than 5 mins with the Dremel to finish it off. Its perfect for taking bulk off but probably would still use mostly hand sanding for the finer touches.
Practising using it now on finer stuff i.e. using it very gently.
