I was wondering if anybody could answer something that has been going on in my head since the planking started. As we're progressing with the hull planking to the top of the frames why hasn't the other deck been fitted yet. This seems to be the way that most kits that I've looked seem to work and I wondered if there was a particular reason for this because it seems to me like we're going 2 steps forward and 1 step back.
This is probably a silly question to ask on here but I just wondered if there was special reason for that method of construction.
Thanks and sorry, I should have said 'Hi to Everyone' at the top, just a lapse on my part.
happy building

Partwork builds rarely follow the route of 'normal' kit builds, though this does not detract from achieving the end result, its just another way of going about the build which allows the introduction of items into the build such as the anchor which would not normally be tackled until later on and keeps the build interesting, and no need for concern as the parts supply is carefully worked out.

Hi daffy09! Cool

If you want to fit the decks as you plank up the hull, you can do as I'm doing, stop the planking at the middle gun ports then start the lower hull planking. You can came back to the upper hull planks later after you have fitted the decks. This way you can sand the decks to fit the hull as you would on a normal kit before planking.

I clamped the top of the ribs between two pieces of MDF, three sets of clamps and this holds the ship steady as I plank the lower hull. This is a older picture as my camera is on the blink again, I'm now onto layer 12 on the lower planks.
The stern is fun to do!.Laugh

Thanks Tomick, that makes sense. It wasn't affecting my build, which is going quite well now I've actually started the planking. I was beginning to wonder when I'd ever get started with planking the hull as the 'fairing' part just seemed to go on and on - a little bit here, a little bit there, looking at it and finding another bit to sand away. Finally thought I was getting a tad neurotic about it all and got on with the job.
Son of Bulwark, Thanks for your help but I'll be carrying on with the build as per instructions as I'm waiting on Cornwall models to get a new stock of Walnut planking in to clad the hull below the waterline. Your tip on the mounting jig was very useful to me as I was wondering how to safely invert the build whilst completing the task.
thanks again to both of you.
Happy building

daffy goodmorning,I think the way they do this parts build,is,sometimes confusing, specially when you have to put some bits away for later,I remember they sent some deck re-inforcment strips recently, well, I've lost them.having collected loads of tubes with bits and pieces in them 'bout 20 tubes, over the years, they seem to swallow up and eat the odd piece, hence I've lost bits.then regurgitates months later when you've replaced them.so I wish they only gave you the bits for working on in that issue,.................now where did I put that knife!!!!!

Hi Karl, I did that with my previous builds and still have a box full of bits and pieces such as five or six falconettes that got left off the Bounty, gratings, name plaques, cast metal ship's cutter, (god knows where that came from) and so on...now I mark everything (once or twice) with every issue that comes because I am getting so forgetful??? Hope you found your craft knife...now where did I put my Victory build???LOL
