You may notice from the title of this thread the word aviator (singular), so discounts the Wright brothers.

The man who was working on manned flight in the previous decade to the Wright brothers was, Otto Lilienthal.

Below is a link to a short history of his life and acheivements, including his inspiration of the Wright brothers.
