Only 351 2000GT's were ever made. Two of them got their roofs chopped for the 007 movie "You Only Live Twice" and one got obliterated by a fallen tree in Japan, another three were given to racing legend Carol Shelby.

Shelby stripped two 2000GT's of unnecessary parts, increased their engine capacity, replaced the tires, suspension and entered both of them in the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) production car races in the CP category. The third one was kept as a spare.
Among the three cars, one of them had the MF10-100001 chassis number, which was the first 2000GT ever made!

The two special prepped 2000GTs competed only one season in 1968, being only outrun by a Porsche 911, which placed them on second and third places.
After the season, the spare unit was shipped back to Japan where it got build as a replica of the SCCA winner. The two racing cars remained in the US, one of them having been recently sold at auction for $1.7 million.

So next time someone says they are a Shelby fan, don’t forget to test his knowledge and ask what he knows about the only Toyota model that got to be touched by the famous American automotive designer and racing driver!

And there is quite a fascinating backstory to this development, complete with images, scans of letters and so on - worth a read!

So who has the guts to paint their 1/10 kit like this? I would do it in a heartbeat if I had the money to buy the kit. Sadly it will probably be out of stock before I get the cash in hand.

DeAgostini kit builds:

Millennium Falcon: 18% Complete
Shelby GT-500: 28% Complete
Thunderbird 2: 13.75% Complete

You'd also have to change, scratch build and remove many things for it to replicate the SCCA.

A brave move to say the least Blink

yes I agree. It looks like it would be difficult to modify the kit.
