Just a short update as I finally got going at last. I thought putting the gun carriages on the deck would be straight forward, but it turned out a little trickier than I imagined, although I did remember it was a fiddly business when I installed them on the upper gun deck.
One thing I noticed for those following on, is the carriages nearest the stern pretty much butt up to the cabin walls/doors and will sit underneath the steps to the poop deck. This will depend on how close to the cabin walls the gun ports are on your model, of course. As a result, I found it better on mine, in this case, to not install the gun tackle on the stern side of the gun carriage. It causes the gun is at an angle and does not sit correctly and, since it will not be seen, I left it off.
Also completed the ladder down to the upper gun deck. I have used these steps a number of times on the real Victory, and I am always reminded when Nelson came up this ladder to go to his cabin, as he boarded the ship for the last time when leaving Portsmouth on the 14th September. To actually put these stairs together on the model is certainly a reflective moment.
As you can also see, the model has attracted a lot of dust, mainly from the metalwork restoring I have been doing, so a good clean up will be in order.
I got up to Issue 80 i.e. ⅔ complete, reasonably quickly last year but these last 3 issues seem to have dragged on. I only have a couple of months left here, so let’s hope I can move forward a bit quicker now.

Hi John,
Nice to see the latest updates on your build.
Very tidy as per usual.
I fitted my guns next to the cabins (a bit early in my build because I thought it would be easier) but I had the same problem as you with the tackle.
I also left the tackle off on the cabin side of the two rearmost guns.

It does seem like 3 steps forward and 2 back at times. Just working on the ladder up to the poop deck and managed to break one of the ladder sides. Hey ho.
Also found that the stanchions and wire for one side were missing so need to sort that out.
Onwards and upwards.

So this will be my last post for the year as I return to the UK soon until next February. Certainly many have suffered but TBH, being in a lockdown is not really a hardship for a modeller I guess! Completed stages 85-88 now, and it’s been slow, mainly because of the great summer we have had here and a few other projects.
TIP #1
Be careful when drilling out the holes for the heads. The instructions say we need to use a 3 mm bit, but it is easy to destroy the thin wood used for these. I used 1 mm and then a 2 mm bit for the pilot holes first and then simply turned the 3 mm drill bit by hand to cut the final hole. All safe and sound that way
TIP #2
I have mentioned before about using drill sizes smaller than recommended when using nails as pins or placing eye bolts. For the knight heads and kevels, the instructions suggests using a 0.7 mm drill, but I found using a 0.6 mm gives a tighter and better fit.

As I was looking at the gallery, something didn’t seem right, The balustrades we're not sitting correctly. Checked the port side, and they were OK, so had to rip them out and reseat them.

TIP #3
Fitting the stem decorations. This is really for anyone who has not yet reached Stage 44. The stem decorations should go between the stem trims but, mine were placed too close together. Had I known this back at stage 44, I could have placed them slightly further apart. Anyway, I don’t think they look too bad where they ended up, which is as high as they go.

I decided to have a go at paining the blue stripes in the bow frames rather than leave them yellow. I had 1 mm and 2 mm masking tape but neither looked right. 1½mm would have been best. Still some touching up to do, but it looks OK.
