On display at the Jutland exhibition 24th May 2016

The iconic object, recovered from the wreck of the battle-cruiser at the bottom of the Atlantic during 2015, will take pride of place in a new exhibition in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

The 18in bell has been undergoing conservation in the laboratory of the Mary Rose Trust, which was picked up from the wreck by a state-of-the-art robot submarine in a delicate operation led by Microsoft founder and philanthropist Paul G Allen and supported by today’s Royal Navy and the HMS Hood Association which keeps the memory of the ship and her men alive.

Crowdfunding for Film about Hood's Bell

Meanwhile, Rob White and his Maritime Films UK colleague, Andy Jones, are making a film telling the story of the bell recovery from Hood's wreck. The HMS Hood Association is part-funding the project but, in order to complete the film to the standard required, Rob and Andy are going to launch an appeal for “crowd funding" in late May.

I suppose we all have our own personal thoughts on this. The bell recovery is fully supported by the HMS Hood Association whose members include veterans who served in the ship before her final mission in 1941, and relatives of those lost with her.
The wreck of HMS Hood is designated under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986. The Government licensed the recovery of the bell: as well as providing a memorial, the recovery will prevent it being taken by any illegal operation for personal gain.
